Juniper Networks offers two intelligent traffic load balancing applications for the MX Series 3D Universal Edge Router.

  • The Application Delivery Controller (ADC) runs on powerful service cards to provide highly scalable and sophisticated Layer 4-7 traffic load-balancing.
  • The Transparent Load Balancer (TLB) leverages the traffic distribution capabilities of the powerful Junos TRIO chipset to efficiently provide L4 traffic load balancing.

These licensed software applications feature advanced algorithms, parsing techniques and server health monitoring technologies that improve performance, scale and availability for Web, DNS, CDN, streaming video, e-mail, LDAP, WAP and other critical services.

The ADC and the TLB simplify network design and lower operational costs by eliminating service specific load balancing appliances, while concurrently protecting investments in Junos and MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routers.

  • The Application Delivery Controller (ADC) is a fully qualified and supported Juniper Networks software product that leverages the mature feature set of Alteon ADC technology from Radware lnc. to provide MX Series 3D integrated L4-L7 traffic load balancing.
  • The Application Delivery Controller addresses the resiliency and performance requirements of many types of services and applications, including DNS, WAP gateways, CDNs, SIP based VoIP services, which complements the MX Series comprehensive set of L2-L7 services.
  • The Transparent Load Balancer (TLB) leverages the traffic distribution capabilities of the proven and widely deployed TRIO chipset to provide intelligently distribute traffic among locally attached servers based on source IP address-based hashing algorithm (CRC) to distribute traffic.
  • Both the ADC and TLB maximize service performance, scale and continuity by intelligently distributing traffic to the optimal server based on real time health checks that monitor server load and availability.
  • Integrating advanced traffic load balancing capabilities into the MX Series 3D eliminates the cost and complexity of qualifying, sparing, and maintaining service specific load balancing appliances, and avoids consuming additional network interfaces, power and rack space.
  • Junos integration permits the ADC, the TLB, and the MX Series 3D to share the same operating system and management tools, and utilizes any pre-existing Junos integration with Operational Support Systems (OSS), which further reduces costs and risk.

Part Number Description
VAS-ADC-2 Application Delivery Controller license supports IPv4 and IPv6 transport and application layer (L4-L7) load balancing and integrated health checks in order to improve service performance, scale, and uptime. Requires MS-DPC for MX240, MX480 and MX960 Universal Edge Routers.
S-SDG-TLB Transparent Load Balancing license supports IPv4 and IPv6 source based L4 load balancing implemented directly on Trio-based Modular Port Concentrators (MPCs), in order to cost-effectively improve service performance, scale, and uptime. Requires MS-DPC for health checks; supported by MX240, MX480 and MX960 Universal Edge Routers.
