VPNs and WAN Evolution
Introduction
Applications are demanding more from wide area networks (WANs). Today's WAN solutions must provide wider reach, greater application awareness and acceleration to improve response times - while lowering the cost of implementation and operation.
Increasing numbers of users for more applications create the need to extend and consolidate network infrastructure. Virtual Private Network (VPN) options for next-generation WANs are secure enough to augment and/or replace existing FR/ATM circuits and provide wider reach, with increased flexibility and scalability.
New applications, such as voice and video over IP, and centralization of application servers increase traffic load and the risk of link delay and congestion. Application acceleration platforms improve the performance of applications over the WAN, even for constrained global links and where many applications are contending for the same bandwidth.
Juniper Networks' solutions for the WAN augment existing network infrastructure to provide secure VPNs and application acceleration. The portfolio covers a diverse set of needs and options for securing and assuring network application delivery.
Description
Juniper Networks supports evolution in WAN infrastructure by enabling VPNs for site-to-site and remote access connections and accelerating applications over existing WAN links and newer IP services connections.
VPNs
VPN solutions lower the capital outlay and ongoing costs of legacy networks by leveraging the Internet and/or MPLS services. Juniper Networks' VPN solutions include carrier-grade MPLS-based VPNs for the largest organizations, secure IPSec connections for site-to-site communications and SSL-based VPNs for providing remote access to individual off-site users. IT can use each of these solutions independently or in combination to meet diverse communications needs.
IPSec VPNs
Juniper Networks' integrated Firewall/ IPSec VPN security devices provide the essential security functions required for connecting sites over the Internet. The platforms integrate firewall and IPSec VPN, with models offering integrated IDP or antivirus, web filtering and wireless access. Juniper Networks' IPSec platforms support centralized user security policy and enable a unique high-availability option in the form of dynamic route-based VPNs. Virtualization technologies allow segmentation of the network into many separate zones within a single platform for enforcing compliance to corporate security policies.
MPLS VPNs
For very large organizations, MPLS VPNs offer additional virtualization options, along with advanced capabilities for rapid network failover (within 50 msec) and traffic management for optimizing link use. MPLS segmentation yields several benefits, including security through separation, isolation of unpredictable applications and traffic congestion, and prioritization of performance-sensitive applications. Companies adopting MPLS within their private backbone typically augment their connectivity options with IPSec tunnels to smaller sites.
Juniper Networks M-series and J-series routing platforms offer unmatched MPLS feature depth, including all forms of MPLS VPNs, failure detection and fast re-route, MPLS traffic engineering and management, and a rich set of management tools. With key advances in both router hardware and software architecture design, the M- and J-series deliver superior scale, performance and reliability over alternative routing platforms.
SSL VPNs
For remote users, Juniper Networks SSL VPN platforms combine VPN and endpoint security, policy-setting, scanning and enforcement into a single, clientless system for lowest total cost of ownership. Only Juniper Networks' SSL platforms provide the most extensive set of open interfaces and tools for backend integration to both existing desktop compliance systems and user applications, including Web-based and traditional client interfaces.
WAN Acceleration
Juniper Networks WX platforms optimize bandwidth use on WAN circuits and speed up applications by leveraging a mix of bandwidth management, compression, caching, path optimization and protocol acceleration techniques. The WX application acceleration platforms work end to end with all types of applications, including Web-based, client-server, custom software, voice and video. Only the WX platform offers sequence caching, which can lower bandwidth needs by 98% for file sharing and data replication processes. The WX platforms include a broad set of management tools for monitoring and reporting on WAN and application performance. With the WX platform, you can ensure that remote performance remains on par with local access, even over constrained global links and in cases where many applications contend for the same bandwidth.
