Open IP Solution Development Program

Juniper Networks' Partner Solution Development Platform (PSDP) enables customers and partners to develop and deploy applications on JUNOS software. Juniper provides access to the PSDP technology, as well as technical and business support to partners, through its Open IP Solution Development Program.

The PSDP provides a powerful set of tools and resources, including a software development kit (SDK) with intelligent and secure interfaces to JUNOS routing and service functions.

Customers and partners can use the PSDP to create advanced solutions that combine their own specialist expertise with the extensive networking capabilities of JUNOS. The PSDP design and modular JUNOS architecture provide tight controls for ensuring JUNOS security, performance and reliability, while enabling a diverse set of innovative applications from an expanding ecosystem of partners.

The number one goal of network operators today is leveraging the value of their networks to increase revenue and profits to differentiate their services on something more than price. Juniper’s opening of JUNOS to partner development offers operators a way to build valuable features into their networks, features that can both differentiate existing services and create new and valuable offerings.  The decision to open a router OS is a bold move that can be made only by a vendor with a long history of stability, security, and straightforward standardized releases.  Juniper fits that model.

Partner Solution Development Platform

The Partner Solution Development Platform enables customers and partners to more quickly and efficiently build solutions tailored to their specific go-to-market opportunities and business needs. By building on top of JUNOS software, customers and partners can save time and money not only in application development, but also in the deployment and ongoing operations costs of the solution.

Juniper's range of JUNOS devices from branch to core can support developed applications, such as event optimized routing, customized bandwidth management, advanced security services and extended operations toolsets. Developers can build their applications to run on the Routing Engine (RE) or on Multiservices PICs (MS-PIC), an optional card delivering hardware accelerated packet processing on many Juniper routing platforms.

The modular architecture of JUNOS provides a layer of separation and abstraction between the developed applications and the underlying operating system. The business procedures and technology of the Partner Solution Development Platform further ensure the integrity of JUNOS operations. For example, PSDP applications cannot run on any JUNOS device, unless an authorized network operator explicitly permits them. All applications require a valid digital signature, and the network operator must load and enable each application.

Joining the Program

Customers join the Open IP Solution Development Program to build applications for private use on their networks, while Juniper channel partners, system integrators, ISVs and OEMs can build customized solutions or use the PSDP to accelerate the development of new commercial applications.

To join the program, successful developers will have a base level of networking and software engineering experience. The first step is to work with a Juniper account or partner manager to assess PSDP enablement of the targeted application. All PSDP development partners execute an PSDP License Agreement that specifies the annual licensing and support of the program.

The Open IP Solution Development Program provides a dedicated PSDP support team of experienced JUNOS software engineers who understand the details of the available tools and programming interfaces. These engineers can review partner code, provide insight into the internal workings of JUNOS, develop toolkits and supporting documentation, and supply code fragments and sample applications to accelerate new application development.
