HTTP: Symantec Norton Personal Firewall 2004 ActiveX Control Buffer Overflow

This signature detects attempts to exploit a known vulnerability in Norton Personal Firewall 2004. Attacker can create malicious Web pages containing dangerous ActiveX calls, which if accessed by a victim, can allow the attacker to gain control of the victim's client browser.

Extended Description

Symantec Norton Personal Firewall ActiveX Control is prone to a buffer-overflow vulnerability because the application fails to bounds-check user-supplied data before copying it into an insufficiently sized buffer. A successful attack would corrupt process memory, allowing arbitrary code to run in the context of the client application using the affected ActiveX control (typically Internet Explorer).
