DOS: Cisco IOS Interface Blocked by IPv4 Packet (PIM)

This signature detects any IPv4 packets using the Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM) protocol. Many versions of Cisco IOS are vulnerable. Attackers can use a maliciously crafted sequence of packets that contain the PIM protocol to cause a device, running Cisco IOS, to stop passing IPv4 traffic.

Extended Description

A denial of service vulnerability has been reported to exist in all hardware platforms that run Cisco IOS versions 11.x through 12.x. This issue may be triggered by a sequence of specifically crafted IPV4 packets. A power cycling of an affected device is required to regain normal functionality.
