Juniper Uses Hybrid Cloud to Accelerate Innovation and Lower Costs

Juniper combined a cloud-first approach with the business value of moving applications and services to the cloud, and increased innovation, agility, and efficiency.

“The game-changing question was ‘Why not cloud?’ to better understand if there was a specific need for an application to stay on-premises.”

Serge Ovchinnikov, IT Architect, Juniper Networks

In 2010, Juniper began looking toward the cloud to accelerate innovation and increase operational efficiency. Its journey resulted in demonstrably high business value. Today, Juniper manages a multicloud environment comprising leading public-cloud services and a state-of-the-art private cloud.

Business Challenge

Juniper started with the arduous task of determining what should move to a public cloud and what should stay in a private data center. Juniper evaluated on-premises applications and services against the business value of moving to the cloud, along with cost, security, and availability of a cloud provider.

Technology Solution

Juniper relocated its engineering data center, equipped with QFX Series switches and SRX Series firewalls. A Contrail network overlay supports cloud-ready workloads, with MX Series routers for edge gateways. The Contrail Cloud Platform provides a virtual overlay for user-facing workloads, and Junos Space Security Director provides granular policy control. Juniper uses Amazon Web Services for development and back-end applications.

Business Results

Through efficiencies from its public and private clouds, Juniper lowered IT costs by 30 percent. It’s consolidating 300 corporate applications and 18 data centers into 150 public-cloud applications and one private-cloud data center. Automation has enabled Juniper to speed up Junos OS release cycles and has greatly boosted developers’ productivity.

“Moving to cloud allowed us to rightsize our environment. We can give folks the capacity they need in the way that they use it.”

Serge Ovchinnikov, IT Architect, Juniper Networks
