Internationally recognized Maynooth University builds a new campus network to accommodate expansion and adds a separate data center network to support disaster recovery and virtualization.
Dearbhla O’Reilly, ICT infrastructure manager, Maynooth University
Maynooth University, part of the National University of Ireland, is an internationally recognized research university in the fields of humanities, social and spatial sciences, mathematics, communication, computation, and health. Physical expansion and the adoption of new IT technologies recently drove new network deployments.
Maynooth University recently added several new buildings to its campus to gain more teaching and residential space. These changes created a need for a new campus core network to connect the sites and boost performance as mobile and SaaS traffic joined the network. The university also needed to build a separate data center network to support growing demands.
Maynooth University deployed the Juniper SRX Series firewalls for secure connectivity. EX4300 Ethernet Switches formed its new campus core, deployed in a Juniper Virtual Chassis configuration with upstream links to a QFX5100 Switch data center network. Junos Space management applications provide the university with error-free service provisioning, simplified network operations, and automated troubleshooting.
By working with Juniper, Maynooth University implemented a fully redundant data center network across dual sites on campus that also securely connect to its outsourced applications. Its research community can now transfer extremely large data sets that are terabytes in size due to resilient connectivity and increased bandwidth.
