Corporate Responsibility

Green Networking

Juniper Networks products meet some of the strictest environmental standards in the industry. We continue to innovate and look at new technology that can help minimize the impact of our products on the environment.

  • Overview

Juniper’s greatest impact on the environment is through our products, so we’re reducing our carbon footprint with products that are environmentally responsible in all phases of their life cycles, a complex challenge that demonstrates our commitment to protecting the environment.

We monitor compliance with local and international laws in all of our locations worldwide, and work with governments, industry partners, and consortia, to harmonize regulations with innovation. We collaborate with governments, industry vendors, and customers, to develop and implement energy metrics that measure the efficiency of networks.

Our product designers and suppliers identify and recommend environmental improvements through a design for the environment (DfE) program based on the New Product Introduction process. The priorities of the DfE initiative are energy efficiency, materials innovation, and recyclability, including:

    • Reduced CO2 footprint
    • Reduced ozone-depleting materials and substances
    • Compliance with legislated restrictions of hazardous substances
    • Reduced fossil fuel consumption

    Environmental Compliance

  • RoHS

EU Directive 2002/95/EC Restriction of the use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS)

Juniper Networks follows EU RoHS restrictions throughout all product series. We have eliminated the use of all banned substances currently outlined in the EU RoHS directive and reduced the usage of restricted substances to levels at or below legal limits. And, we continue to improve product designs to meet the changing environmental requirements though the implementation of the Design for Environment (DfE) practices.

Juniper’s overall product certification of compliance for the EU RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances), WEEE, China RoHS and REACH is available by contacting environmental-relations@juniper.net.

  • WEEE

EU Directive 2002/96/EC Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)

Juniper provides recycling support for our equipment in order to meet the European Union’s WEEE Directive. All of our products introduced after August 13, 2005, are marked or documented with an icon depicting a crossed-out wheeled bin with a bar underneath per the requirement.

For recycling our products as defined by the EU WEEE Directive, please open a Juniper Customer Care case by filling out this form. When filling out the form, please choose ‘Not Applicable’ as a category, and then choose ‘Environmental Compliance’ and ‘WEEE Submission’ from the appropriate dropdown menus. Your recycling request will be handled through our Customer Care group and properly delivered to AER Worldwide. If you prefer, you can call Juniper Customer Care directly at 1-888-314-5822, and staff there will ensure that your recycling request is properly handled.

The countries covered by this directive and Juniper’s program are those of the European Union — Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom. At present Juniper does not have in place a recycling program for countries other than those in this list.

Products returned through our reclamation process will be recycled, recovered, or disposed of in a responsible manner utilizing an ISO 14001 certified supplier. Our packaging is designed to be reused or recycled, and should be handled in accordance with local, state, or country-specific recycling policies and procedures.

Regulation EC No. 1907/2006 concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals

Juniper Networks follows EU REACH requirements in regards to reporting and authorizing chemicals imported, produced, or used in the preparations of products within the EU Member States. Juniper continues to monitor and assess both the REACH initiative and Juniper Products to ensure proper registration and reporting is initiated when laws or products change.

Juniper Suppliers have been notified of their role in these new requirements and their data will be used as required through the already established process within Juniper for product environmental compliance.

  • Green Certifications
    • 80 PLUS

The 80 PLUS initiative promotes energy efficiency in power supply units (PSUs). 80 PLUS certifications are applied to products with greater than 80% energy efficiency at 20%, 50% and 100% of rated load, and a power factor of 0.9 or greater at 100% load. The Juniper goal is to use PSUs that waste 20% or less energy as heat loss at the specified load levels, reducing electricity use and costs compared to less efficient PSUs.

    • China RoHS

Juniper Networks complies with China RoHS on all products that include specific China RoHS label designations and reporting metrics for restricted substances. China RoHS symbols are included on products that are free of all restricted substances present above the permitted levels.

    • China RoHS 50

While the China RoHS symbol is included on products that contain restricted substances above the permitted levels, the "50" in the center of the symbol is the "Environmentally Friendly Use Period" for the product. All products with this symbol are accompanied by the table of hazardous materials indicating their location in products.

    • Green Dot

Juniper Networks marks product shipping containers with the "Green Dot" label to signify our participation as a Repak member through financial contributions to the cost, recovery, and recycling of product packaging per the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive - 94/62/EC.

    • Recycle

Juniper Networks utilizes the international recycling symbol on all products and packaging to insure that end users recognize that our products are designed for recyclability. It is our goal to reduce waste in all regional sales locations.
