Based in Ohio, One Energy installs utility-scale wind turbines and manages some of the largest, high-profile wind projects in the world. The energy provider prides itself on minimizing risk and ensuring that projects are fully auditable for its customers.

The One Energy wind turbines are remotely controlled through a system that was designed before Internet access was commonplace. The system didn’t have any modern security measures to protect against cyberthreats. Technicians could open only one customer VPN connection at a time, so the energy provider needed multiple computers to access multiple customers’ wind systems.

Business Solution

One Energy turned to a managed services solution from Ohio-based IT provider CentraComm, using Juniper SRX Series firewalls with advanced threat intelligence. Connection to the wind turbines is secured through a site-to-site VPN, with the SRX300 in the data center and SRX110 in the field. Two-factor authentication controls access to the turbines.

Business Results

One Energy’s wind turbines are protected from cyberthreats, and authorized users can access the system securely from any mobile device. Technicians can open multiple customer VPNs without introducing security threats. With the SRX Series scalability, CentraComm can expand the managed security service easily as One Energy grows.
