Learn about IP MPLS benefits

Scalable and secure IP networks enable mobile and wireless and mobile carriers to pursue new revenue streams and a lower-cost services infrastructure.

Increasingly, mobile operators are moving to a single infrastructure, looking towards Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC). An IP/MPLS mobile backbone serves as the network foundation, efficiently supporting a mix of voice and data services, as well as wireless and wireline. As mobile services transition to IP, operators must secure both users and the services against threats previously limited to wireline networks.

Juniper Networks provides a wireless carrier network solution that helps mobile operators evolve to a secure, converged IP infrastructure. We work closely with strategic partners to integrate our mobile and wireless products into end-to-end solutions for core, RAN, and IMS. Eight of the top ten mobile operators use our mobile carrier network solutions, and customers have deployed our products in over 80 wireless networks worldwide.

Topics

Mobile Backhaul

Mobile providers need a scalable backhaul solution that protects their investment at the cell site and gives them the flexibility to add next-generation technologies quickly and cost effectively. Extending IP/MPLS all the way to the cell site, the Juniper Mobile Backhaul solution includes products for the cell site (BX 7000), metro backhaul network (MX-series) and aggregation site (M-series), all managed by a comprehensive network management solution (JUNOScope). The Juniper solution offers service providers reduced operating expenses, improved scalability, and investment protection.

Mobile Packet Core

An IP/MPLS mobile backbone serves as the foundation for a single, integrated multiservice network. Juniper Networks enables a converged network for all L2 and L3 services, including FR and ATM interfaces, as well as voice and signaling. Mobile operators can cap their ATM and Frame Relay investment and move towards a cost-effective, scalable, all-IP routed MPLS core. Our T-series and M-series platforms anticipate new service requirements, with IPv6 implemented in hardware, and scalable performance for fully enabling quality of service (QoS), VPN, monitoring, and other advanced processing features.

Building Next-Generation Mobile Packet Core Networks: Enabling Mobile Operators to Build Highly Efficient Converged IP/MPLS Core Networkspdf icon940 KB
This white paper outlines current trends (GSM/UMTS, CDMA, and WiMAX) and challenges facing mobile operators today, including the evolution of 2G/3G mobile architectures to packet-based infrastructures. This paper also discusses how an IP/MPLS infrastructure is an ideal way for mobile operators to reduce OPEX while paving the way for new revenue-generating services such as those based on the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) and how Juniper Networks addresses the fundamental requirements for mobile core networks.

RAN Aggregation

The transition to IP RAN has begun, and the aggregation of more and faster circuits is required, particularly in CDMA 2000 1x DO access networks. Juniper Networks M-series products deliver the required dense E1/T1 and above aggregation, high availability, and performance for IP radio access aggregation.

Juniper Networks Steel-Belted Radius Carrier AAA Server: Extended Support for WiMAXpdf icon184 KB
Juniper Networks Carrier AAA Solution for WiMAX provides scalable, reliable, carrier-grade AAA, mobility management and roaming. It supports multiple EAP methods, robust mobile IP session management capabilities, and key management functionality in Home Connectivity Service Network (HCSN) and Visited Connectivity Service Network (VCSN) scenarios.

To manage their services effectively, mobile service providers need a system for Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA) that leverages existing investments, scales easily, and supports tomorrow's service suites. The Juniper Networks Steel-Belted Radius family of high-performance RADIUS servers is a core component of mobile networks, providing centralized user authentication and access policy management, with the performance and reliability to handle any traffic load.

Secure Mobile Networks

Mobile operators converging to IP networks and adding data services, such General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), to their customer offerings must take appropriate measures to protect their infrastructure and subscribers. For example, the GPRS Tunneling Protocol (GTP) inherently lacks security. Ubiquitous data delivery requires that mobile operators connect their networks to other networks, and these gateway points introduce additional security risks. Juniper Networks security platforms, including the Juniper Networks ISG Series with IDP, provide stateful inspection and policy enforcement, denial of service (DoS) attack protection, and over billing attack protection to reduce risk levels.

GGSN

Juniper Networks has an established partnership with Ericsson, a leading provider of mobile technology, to build the J20 GGSN (Gateway GPRS Support Node) for GPRS and WCDMA. The J20 GGSN provides a gateway between mobile core networks and external IP networks, such as corporate LANs and ISPs, providing connectivity to the Internet.

Wi-Fi Public Wireless LAN (WLAN)

Today's public Wi-Fi networks frequently use CPU-based gateways located at each hotspot site, which often fail to maintain throughput as subscribers are added and differentiated services are enabled. As a result, Wi-Fi providers typically offer only basic Internet access. Juniper Networks solution leverages our E-series Edge Routers with the SDX-300 Service Deployment System, managing individual user policies for fine-grained IP service delivery at the edge of PWLAN. This approach centralizes control, service activation, and security at the service provider edge, rather than each hotspot location, to provide a scalable, cost-effective architecture for differentiated services.
