Unified network across 13 countries and enhanced operational efficiency

Nippon Gases is one of the largest industrial gas companies in Europe, producing oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and other gases that are used across healthcare, food and beverage, manufacturing, biotech, and other markets.

With operations in 13 countries, Nippon Gases is migrating to Juniper’s AI-Native Networking Platform to deliver exceptional digital experiences in its information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) environments while streamlining network operations to support the company’s growth and innovation.

Challenge

Nippon Gases has grown organically and through acquisition and, as a result, different countries used a different vendors’ network products to support their local operations.

“We wanted to harmonize our network infrastructure to improve network stability and the quality of the support,” said Bjorn Dupont, IT Network Manager at Nippon Gases. “Centralized management was impossible. We had to manage each country’s network device by device.”

Simplifying network provisioning and achieving centralized visibility and control were top priorities. Nippon Gases sought out a smarter, more automated network solution that would lift the burden of decentralized, manual management. “We wanted a new network solution that could help us identify and correlate network events to identify potential issues,” said Dupont.

Nippon Gases has standardized on Juniper’s AI-Native Networking Platform, the only fully integrated AI-Native portfolio of campus and branch solutions. With the full stack Juniper solution, Nippon Gases can manage wired and wireless access under a shared Mist AI engine and microservices cloud infrastructure.

With Juniper, IT can deliver a reliable network service to support IT and OT environments, from its offices, specialty labs, and manufacturing plants to its trucks, pipelines, and ships while simplifying network operations.

Solution

Juniper AI-Native Networking simplifies network operations

Juniper’s AI-Native Networking Platform allows Nippon Gases to significantly streamline network management while assuring that every connection is reliable, measurable, and secure. The IT team can put users’ and devices’ digital experiences first and reduce the IT workload across the entire network life cycle.

A Juniper Enterprise Agreement gives Nippon Gases an easier way to purchase, consume, and manage the portfolio of Juniper AI-Native Networking Platform software and support services anywhere in its business.

Outcome

AI-Native Networking brings simplicity, reliability, and scale

The full stack, AI-Native Juniper network allows Nippon Gases to support business growth with the ability to deploy network services, operate more easily, and realize lower TCO and OpEx with superior end-to-end experiences for both users and IT.

The network design is harmonized, with only four Juniper wireless access point models and three Juniper switch models used to meet all use cases. A standardized design speeds up setup at new locations, eases problem resolution, and simplifies stocking spare network parts.

“We can adapt the base configuration to the unique needs of each location and quickly deploy the network using Zero Touch Provisioning,” said Dupont. “We use role-based access to delegate responsibilities to local teams while we maintain central control. Our network is much easier to maintain now that it’s standardized.”

Support continuous operations of critical gases
Collaboration and teamwork are critical as 3,000 employees work to ensure a safe, uninterrupted supply of industrial and medical gases to customers across Europe and focus on innovative and sustainable gas production. “With Juniper, we now have a stable network environment,” said Dupont.

A network that scales for growth
“Our business is very dynamic,” said Dupont. “We are building new factories and making acquisitions. IT doesn’t always have a lot of lead time to meet the business need, and having a Juniper network helps us to implement new sites faster.”

 AI insights and automation
Juniper’s AI-Native tools, including Marvis Virtual Network Assistant, continuously optimize the user experience and provide visibility into impending problems. “With Juniper, it’s a lot easier to identify issues and we have more tools to solve them,” said Dupont. “Marvis can do a proper investigation and help us pinpoint problems.”

Nippon Gases Outcome
“The network is the first to be blamed, but in 99% of the cases, it’s not the problem. With Marvis, we can provide the evidence and pinpoint the real issue faster.”
