Victorian Opera inspires, be it live or online, backed by a robust enterprise network

As the world went into lockdown in 2020, Australia’s Victorian Opera went straight to work, sharing its passion for opera and musical theater far and wide through web series and live stream performances. As it returns home to the stage, the state opera company will continue to perform in Victoria’s best theaters and concert halls, with its creative and adventurous work supported by a Juniper enterprise network.

Challenge

Creative, accessible, and affordable opera and musical theater

Victorian Opera, the state of opera of Victoria, is anything but traditional.

Victorian Opera takes an imaginative approach to opera and musical theater as it has entertained hundreds of thousands of people since its formation in 2005. It premieres at least one new Australian opera every year and has commissioned 32 new works.

Victorian Opera needed an enterprise-grade network to continue to bring the joy of discovery and inspiration to the diverse communities of artists and audiences it serves.

Solution

Enterprise-grade network from Juniper hits the mark

Victorian Opera relies on the Juniper EX4300 Ethernet Switch for an enterprise-grade network at its main location in the historic Horti Hall and rehearsal spaces across Melbourne. The network is the foundation of the opera’s innovative productions, as well as ticket sales, patron services, marketing, development, and corporate functions.

“Juniper is a great, robust solution for us,” says Peter Darby, Deputy Production Manager at Victorian Opera. “Our Juniper network is the envy of a lot of other non-profit organizations.

Enterprise-grade capabilities now take center stage. Juniper’s Virtual Chassis technology delivers network resiliency, and even livestreamed performances don’t stress the network. Traffic from different functional areas is safely segmented and treated with the appropriate service levels.

Maxum IT Consulting stage-managed the network upgrade, overseeing design and installation, and providing ongoing expert management. “Maxum IT has been brilliant to work with,” says Darby.

“The rollout of the Juniper network was faultless,” says Darby. “I was expecting hiccups on Monday morning when all of the users logged in, but I didn’t hear from a single person. I waited and waited, and nothing.”

Outcome

Bringing adventurous opera to the people of Victoria and beyond

Victorian Opera opened its 2021 season with Ottorino Respighi’s The Sleeping Beauty, written in 1921 as part of the awakening of Europe after the Spanish flu. Four new commissions for this season explore the miracle of life and its essential fragility.

Big, bold livestreams replicate the experience of large-scale performances for students and opera fans across the region—and beyond.

During the pandemic lockdown, the company sparked joy with an Artists in Isolation web series, virtual choirs, and small recitals.

Victorian Opera employs hundreds of people to create amazing productions. It nurtures the next generation of talent and brings operas into the schools.

With a Juniper network, phone calls and video meetings are crystal-clear. Performances are streamed without network constraint. Ticket sales, marketing, and other business functions are flawless. Even IT functions, such as backups, run more smoothly.

With a Juniper network, Victorian Opera continues to inspire, whether live or online.
