Meet the PTX12008
The Juniper Networks PTX12008 Router is a high capacity 22-rack unit (22-U) modular chassis with eight Flexible PIC Concentrator (FPC) slots. It provides distributed forwarding, and up to 43.2 terabit per second (Tbps) of bandwidth per FPC slot and up to 345.6 Tbps of bandwidth per chassis. PTX12008 Router supports 800 Gbps of speed per port. The chassis is capable of supporting up to 3.2 Terabit Ethernet (TE) of speed per port, protecting your investment as bandwidth needs increase. The PTX12008 delivers significant port density and scale while optimally balancing high thermal tolerance and low power consumption.
The PTX12008 is available in both base and premium configurations, with support for both AC/HVAC/HVDC and DC power supply modules (PSMs), and front-to-back airflow. See PTX12008 Configurations.

Benefits of the PTX12008
-
PTX12008 provides advanced routing and forwarding capabilities—The PTX12008 supports scaling to thousands of BGP peers, tens of millions of routes in the routing tables, and over 100,000 SR tunnels. Additionally, the router provides deep buffering and flexible filtering. All these capabilities are available at line rate, delivering low latency and wire-rate packet performance for IP traffic. The router also supports high forwarding table scale, suitable for Internet peering deployments.
-
Source Packet Routing in Networking (SPRING)—SPRING on PTX12008 supports the latest innovations such as path provisioning through BGP Segment Routing–Traffic Engineering (BGP SR-TE) and Path Computation Element protocol. It also supports many more features such as Topology Independent Loop-Free Alternates (TI-LFAs) and Operation, Administration, and Maintenance (OAM).
-
Always-on infrastructure base—The PTX12008 is engineered with full hardware redundancy for cooling, power, and control plane.
-
Nondisruptive software upgrades—The Junos OS Evolved operating system on PTX12008 supports high availability (HA) features such as graceful Routing Engine switchover (GRES) and nonstop active routing (NSR). With these features, you can implement software upgrades and changes without disrupting network traffic.
-
Built-in security for the AI era:
-
Line-rate Media Access Control Security (MACsec) encryption protects data flows between AI clusters without degrading performance. Additionally, hardware-based protections guard against tampering and external threats.
-
Real-time distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) detection and mitigation at line rate counters increasingly sophisticated attacks.
-
Always-on packet monitoring and automated machine analysis provide continuous protection to WAN infrastructures.
-
Switch Fabric
Switch Interface Boards (SIBs) create the switch fabric for the PTX12008. The SIBs are field-replaceable units (FRUs) and are installed between the FPCs and the fan trays inside the chassis. See PTX12008 Switch Interface Board.
Routing and Control Board
The Routing and Control Board (RCB) contains a Routing Engine and is responsible for system management and system control in the PTX12008. See PTX12008 Routing and Control Board.
FPCs
The PTX12008 has eight horizontal FPC slots on the front panel. The FPCs combine a Packet Forwarding Engine and Ethernet interfaces enclosed in a single assembly. The PTX12008 FPC architecture is based on a number of identical, independent Packet Forwarding Engine slices. Each FPC has three ASICs. The supported FPCs are:
-
PTX12K-LC54OSFP—A 54-port FPC that has 54 OSFP ports. All 54 ports support up to 800 gigabit per second (Gbps) speed.
-
PTX12K-LC54QDD—A 54-port FPC that has 54 QSFP-DD ports. All 54 ports support up to 800 Gbps speed.
Cooling System
The cooling system in PTX12008 consists of three fan trays. Each fan tray contains five dual rotor fans and provide front-to-back chassis cooling. See PTX12008 Cooling System.
Power System
The power system in PTX12008 consists of a single power shelf and support for up to 20 AC/HVAC/HVDC or DC PSMs. The power shelf provides the housing and electrical connections for the PSMs.
The PTX12008 is powered by twenty PSMs. The router supports the following PSMs:
-
JNP-PWR-3K-AC
-
JNP-PWR-3K-DC
Software
The PTX12008 runs Junos OS Evolved, which provides Layer 2 and Layer 3 switching, routing, and security services. Junos OS Evolved runs natively on Linux, and therefore has direct access to all the Linux utilities and operations. It is designed to be modular, allowing for upgrades on a component-by-component basis without a system reboot. Only those components tht you change require a restart. Junos OS Evolved is easily portable and requires minimal installation and configuration to work on any platform. It has the same CLI user interface, the same code base for applications and features, and the same management and automation tools as Junos OS. However, the Junos OS Evolved infrastructure is entirely modernized, ensuring high availability, portability, faster innovation, and simplified upgrades.
For information about the features supported on PTX Series routers, see Feature Explorer.
Boot Time
The boot time for the router is approximately 163 seconds.
The system service restore time is approximately 677 seconds.
Where Can You Use the PTX12008?
You can use the PTX12008 in core, peering, metro aggregation, infrastructure edge, AI data center networks, DC spine, and Data Center Interconnect or Data Center Edge deployments.
Why Upgrade to the PTX12008?
The PTX12008 provides distributed forwarding and up to 43.2 Tbps of bandwidth per FPC slot and up to 345.6 Tbps of bandwidth per chassis. PTX12008 Router supports 800 Gbps of speed per port. The chassis is capable of supporting up to 3.2 TE of speed per port, protecting your investment as bandwidth needs increase.
PTX12008 supports fully redundant power supply, cooling, and routing engines (control and management plane).
The chassis supports nine load-sharing Switch Interface Boards (SIBs). Each SIB has three fabric ASICs and each fabric ASIC connects to a FPC ASIC. Data exchange between the FPC ASICs and the fabric ASICs is cell-based to prevent elephant flows from causing a head-of-line blocking (HOLB). The fabric cards are all active, and the system design ensures that only the fabric ASIC that fails is taken out of service while the other fabric ASICs continue to operate and forward traffic.
The PTX12008 runs Junos OS Evolved operating system, which supports high availability technologies such as graceful Routing Engine switchover (GRES) and nonstop active routing (NSR).
