Hostname, Time Zone, and Identity Settings
Learn how to configure the hostname, time zone, domain name, and DNS servers using Junos OS CLI for SRX1600, SRX4120, and SRX4300 Firewalls.
Configure the Hostname
The hostname is the name that identifies the device on the network. A hostname is easier to remember than an IP address.
To configure:
[edit] root@srx# set system host-name host-name
For example:
set system host-name SRX1600, SRX4120, or SRX4300-node1
When you commit the configuration after set system host-name SRX1600, SRX4120, or
SRX4300-node1, the system sets the unique hostname as SRX1600, SRX4120, or
SRX4300-node1 for the SRX1600, SRX4120, and SRX4300 Firewalls, visible in CLI prompts
and logs.
Domain Name and DNS
The SRX1600, SRX4120, and SRX4300 Firewalls support standard Domain Name System (DNS) configurations including proxy, dynamic DNS (DDNS), client, server, relay using DHCP, and advanced features such as DNS snooping and caching.
Configure the domain name and DNS servers on your firewalls at the system
hierarchy level. This configuration allows hostname resolution and full identity through
DNS.
Configure DNS proxy and resolver under system services hierarchy for name
resolution. Use J-Web or CLI to configure the primary and the secondary DNS servers (for
example, IPv4 and IPv6 addresses like 8.8.8.8).
[edit] root@srx# set system domain-name domain-name root@srx# set system name-server ip-address
For example:
set system services dns name-server 8.8.8.8 set system services dns name-server 8.8.4.4
Configure the Time Zone
To synchronize the date and time on your firewall, you can directly set the time zone under
the [edit system] hierarchy or use NTP for time synchronization. For more
information about how to configure NTP, see NTP Configuration.
-
Set the
timezoneoption undersystemhierarchy.[edit] root@srx# set system time-zone time-zone
Example for UTC:
root@srx> set system time-zone UTC
Junos OS supports compliance for Year 2000 through 2038, with no time limitations.
-
Set the date and time from a configured NTP server in operational mode.
root@srx> set date ntp servers
-
Set the date and time locally.
root@srx> set date YYYYMMDDhhmm.ss
