What-If Failure Simulation

Use what-if failure simulation if you want to check how your network reacts if a specific device, link, or SRLG fails in your network model. A report is generated after you run the simulation. Check the reports to understand the impact of various failures to the network.

The What-if Failure Simulation allows you to manually select specific elements (nodes, links, or SRLGs) to fail, providing more control and flexibility. This means you can simulate a specific element failure and interpret results more efficiently.

To create a what-if failure scenario:

  1. Navigate to Planning > Networks > Offline Models.
The Working Models page is displayed.
  2. From the list of network models (offline version of a live network), select a network model on which you want to simulate the what-if failure scenario and then click Open.
    The offline topology map appears.
  3. Click the Simulation drop-down and select the What-If button to define a what-if failure scenario that you want to apply to your network model. The What-If Failure Simulation page is displayed.
Note: Before you run a simulation, ensure that you save the changes made to the network model by clicking More > Save Model.
  4. While the What-If Failure Simulation page is open, you can navigate to the Device, Link, or SRLGs tab on the offline topology map, and select one or more devices, links, or SRLGs for which you want to simulate a failure scenario.
Note: You need not close the What-If Failure Simulation page to select one or more devices, links, or SRLGs for which you want to simulate a failure scenario.
  5. On the What-If Failure Simulation page, click Add from NetInfo.
The selected device, link, or SRLG is added to the Fail Elements table.
Note: You cannot check how your network reacts if a specific tunnel, demands, or interface fails. The Add from NetInfo is disabled when you navigate to the Tunnels, Demands, or Interfaces tab.
  6. After the devices, links, or SRLGs are added to the table, click Simulation.
A new What-If Failure Simulation page appears.
  7. On the What-If Failure Simulation page, do the following:
    • Select the layer for which you want to create the what-if failure scenario. You can either choose Demand (Layer 3) or Tunnel (Layer 2).

    • Enter a description about the what-if failure scenario that you are about to simulate.

    • View the count of different network elements that you have chosen for failure simulation.

  8. Click Simulate to create a what-if failure scenario.

A message indicating that the what-if failure simulation is being processed is displayed. Depending on the size of the network the simulation task might take longer to complete. Reports are generated only after the simulation is complete.

  9. On the Reports page (Working Models > select the model > click Reports), check the reports to understand how your network reacted to the failure scenario. For more information, see View Reports.
