Replace a Device
Sometimes, you might need to replace a device in your network (for example, during critical hardware failure). Routing Director provides the Replace Device option to help you replace a device without disrupting network services.
To replace a device, you must have another device of the same model installed in your network and onboarded to Routing Director. When you issue the command to replace a device, you are prompted to select the new device that would replace the old device.
Routing Director performs the following steps to replace a device:
Backs up configuration on the device you want to replace (old device).
Changes the device-specific details (for example, IP address and hostname) in the backed up configuration with the details of the new device.
Commits the backed up configuration from the old device on to the new device by using the CLI.
Sets the status of the original device to Undefined without offboarding the device.
In this release, replacing a device is a beta feature. Routing Director can back up the configuration from the old device and commit the backed-up configuration on to the new device.
An audit log is generated when you replace a device and you can view it on the Audit Logs page (Settings Menu > Audit Logs).
Pre-requisites
The new device must be already onboarded to Routing Director and listed on the Inventory page. The device can be in the connected or disconnected state, but in the unassigned state (that is not assigned to any site).
