BOOK DESCRIPTION

Day One: Advanced IPv6 Configuration is the second book in the Junos Networking Technologies Series on IPv6. The first book, Day One: Exploring IPv6, introduced all the basics of configuring an IPv6 enabled LAN: interface addressing, static routes, neighbor discovery, and IGP routing. Now you're ready to complete the configuration and testing tasks required to enable BGP routing in your network. You'll learn how to set up both Internal Border Gateway Protocol (IBGP) and External Border Gateway Protocol (EBGP) with IPv6, and how to leverage native IPv6 peering. You’ll also learn how to test and verify your IPv6 BGP configurations.

Chris Grundemann
Chris specializes in the design, implementation, and operation of large IP, Ethernet and Wireless Ethernet networks.

 What got you started on this book?

This is my second Day One book on IPv6. My friend and Juniper RE to tw telecom, Nate Day and I had been talking about writing a book for Juniper about the time that the Day One project got launched. I looked over the list of potential topics and when I saw that there was not an author for IPv6 yet - I jumped on it. I think that this topic is extremely important and will only become more so over the next two to three years as available IPv4 addresses are all put into use and IPv6 networks become more and more necessary for more and more organizations.

Since I couldn't fit everything into one Day One book, it made sense to keep writing.

 Who is this book for?

The book is for network engineers who are new to IPv6 or those with IPv6 experience who are new to JUNOS. I tried to balance making the booklet approachable for those just getting their feet wet and useful for those with more experience who just need a refresher of a quick reference.

 After reading this book, what will the reader learn or know?

Hopefully anyone can start deploying their own IPv6 network after reading both of my IPv6 books.

 What are you hoping that people will learn from this book?

This book builds on Day One: Exploring IPv6 to cover deploying BGP for IPv6 as well as many other details needed to roll out a production IPv6 network. Things such as VRRP, CoS and system management.

 What do you recommend as the next item to read after this book?

There are numerous references to IPv6 in all of Juniper Networks technical documentation and you can also skim through the IETF RFCs.

 What was your inspiration?

I do a lot of work with ARIN (American Registry for Internet Numbers) and ISOC (Internet Society) in addition to my "day job" as a network architect and those organizations are extremely involved in accelerating the adoption of IPv6 before IPv4 exhaustion becomes a real problem for the growth of the Internet. Since we (Internet users as a community) are quickly approaching that time, I thought it was important to help in this small way.

 What's your favorite bit/part in the book?

I guess I would have to say the BGP section is my favorite - I just really like Internet routing and BGP! Also, all of the step-by-step how-to bits are really fun to write!
