 Who is this book for?

This booklet is for new users of Junos or anyone considering becoming a user.

After reading this book, what will the reader learn or know?

Read this booklet to understand how to navigate the CLI to get done what you need to get done. Find out how to enter both the configuration and operational mode and the basic commands to operate the device. Use onboard help and keyboard shortcuts to speed up your work. Learn how to capitalize on the safety features of the Junos operating system commit model and how to prepare system changes in advance, along with the shortcuts and tips of experienced users to avoid common problems.

What do you recommend as the next item to read after this book? What are your plans for more?

Read the complete Junos Foundation Series of Day One booklets and then move on to learn about additional topics in other Day One series. Any new user should also take advantage of the many freely available training materials of Juniper's Fast Track program by visiting www.juniper.net/fasttrack.

 What was your inspiration?

New users often came to our boot camps skeptical about the effort and value of learning Junos. However, within an hour or two, their perspectives commonly changed, as they recognized the power and ease of using Junos. We wanted to give our readers a fast way to learn the foundational methods and differences of the Junos CLI so that they could quickly make up their own minds.

What's your favorite bit/part in the book?

Chapter 4 gives the reader a first taste of the innovative functionality in Junos, designed not only to simplify administration but also safeguard operations. While advancing users will discover many more, these foundational capabilities remain favorites of Junos fans everywhere.

How hard was it to write? Tell us how and when you wrote it?

This Day One booklet was the first ever and so not only were we creating content, we were creating a style and voice for the whole series. Starting off something new where many authors could follow and build upon our first effort was exciting despite some long hours and late nights.

Did you create a test bed for the book? How much set up did it take?

As this booklet is just an early exploration, no test bed was necessary.

 Who tech reviewed your book?

I utilized several team members as well as external resources to review the book. The internal reviewers were made up of technical experts from the Professional Services and Resident Engineer teams and externally, some senior engineer friends at service providers and large enterprises were good enough to review the material.

Who would you like to thank?

Our literary manager, Patrick Ames, provided abundant publishing expertise in defining the Day One series and developing this first booklet. Nancy Koerbel assisted by editing our writing. Susan Harris helped in researching and drafting early editions of this book. Jonathan Looney and Michael Bushong provided examples and exercises along with their extensive expertise. Thank you Nancy Kurahashi for her comments that were incorporated in this version 3.
