0:14 center so david can the data center be

0:16 green

0:17 so uh yes rick um

0:20 data centers can definitely be greener

0:22 and analogy like to use is like the

0:24 greening of transportation you know

0:26 specifically like the automobile

0:28 um you know first you have to but you

0:30 know first you have to measure you know

0:32 where you're at today and what your

0:33 options are so like for automobiles you

0:36 know they started measuring gas mileage

0:38 and uh efficiency and in the data center

0:41 we started uh measuring power

0:43 distribution efficiency such as like

0:45 transformers ups etc

0:48 and then you know what we found is when

0:50 we introduced like in the automobile we

0:52 introduced the um hybrid automobile

0:55 which turned out to be very efficient

0:56 and

0:57 what's very similar is like the eco mode

0:59 ups or other

1:01 battery backed hybrid power distribution

1:04 systems

1:05 these these are much

1:06 higher efficiency and

1:09 better in energy

1:11 however additional improvements are hard

1:14 to come by now

1:15 because we've done so much work so to

1:17 get further improvement if you look at

1:20 the automobile industry

1:22 they've shifted to electric okay so now

1:25 you know data centers really need to you

1:26 know answer back and you know how to uh

1:29 improve the efficiency you know beyond

1:31 the physical limitations

1:33 very cool so what kinds of solutions do

1:36 you see in our near future then

1:39 yeah so you know going back to my

1:41 analogy transportation if we think of

1:43 the movement of data is basically the

1:45 transportation of data using energy you

1:48 know if we think at this level a data

1:50 center is hosting equipment to move data

1:53 okay so so getting back to the

1:55 measurement aspect automobiles they

1:57 provide instruments to show the energy

1:59 use and even the ability to select modes

2:02 of operation to optimize the energy use

2:05 so we have to do the same for our

2:06 equipment and for the data centers and

2:08 make it easy

2:10 for users to optimize the energy use of

2:12 the data center juniper will be

2:14 improving you know the visibility of

2:15 energy use on its systems and provide

2:18 suggestions in the future that's awesome

2:20 david um so any final thoughts

2:24 yeah as a final thought the biggest

2:26 energy reduction that

2:27 that i'm aware of would be the reducing

2:30 energy for cooling

2:32 evs have a big advantage here because

2:35 they are moving and operating in open

2:37 air and easily remove heat you know data

2:39 centers are enclosed

2:41 um 30 to 35 percent of the energy is

2:44 needed just to remove the heat that's

2:46 produced by the equipment you know using

2:48 alternative um cooling like liquid

2:51 cooling technologies can reduce

2:53 energy to say five or ten percent

2:55 and that would be a 20 to 30 improvement

2:58 so that's awesome

3:01 so yeah well we'll continue to

3:04 transport more data using lower energy

3:07 by efficient silicon improvements and

3:09 making uh

3:11 options more visible to customers the

3:13 lowest hanging fruit is reducing energy

3:15 use to cool the data center and make it

3:17 even greener david this is amazing and i

3:20 really do appreciate all the work you're

3:22 doing and all the work the team is doing

3:24 to make our network more efficient and

3:26 more green

3:27 um
