Mr. Merchant is a seasoned executive with a strong track record as a transformation leader. He has held a number of senior executive roles at TIAA-CREF since his arrival there in April 2015, most recently serving as Senior Executive Vice President and Head of Client Services and Technology.
Prior to joining TIAA, in 2014 he founded and ran his own advisory firm. He was the Chief Information and Innovation Officer for the City of New York from March 2012 to February 2014. Previously, he served as Executive Vice President, Chief Information Officer, and as a member of the Executive Committee at Fannie Mae, where he led the Technology and Operations groups. Mr. Merchant also served as Senior Vice President, Chief Information Officer, and Chief Technology Officer at Merrill Lynch.
He gained extensive computer industry and public board experience as a former director of Emulex Corporation, Fair Isaac Corporation, Sierra Atlantic, Level 3 Communications, and Sun Microsystems.
Mr. Merchant earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Bombay University, a master’s degree in computer science from Memphis State University, and an MBA from Temple University.
