Virgin Media Lights 40G Path in UK with Nortel and Juniper Networks

Manchester to London Trial Demonstrates 40G Over a Live UK Commercial Network

LONDON - Virgin Media [NASDAQ: VMED] has teamed with Nortel* [NYSE/TSX: NT] and Juniper Networks [NASDAQ: JNPR] to prepare to meet ongoing network demands from its customers for ever-increasing speed and bandwidth.

The 40G North-South trial, on Virgin Media's existing 10G network, shows how Virgin Media is ready to respond to the growing customer appetite for bandwidth-hungry entertainment services such as catch-up TV, video-on-demand, advanced multimedia communications and high speed Internet with up to 20Mb and 50Mb now in trials.

The successful 40G trial, conducted over a 350km (217 mile) span of Virgin Media's current UK 10G network, demonstrated the economic feasibility of optimizing existing optical network assets and scaling the network to achieve market-leading transmission rates.

For the trial, believed to be the first of its kind in the UK, Nortel provided 40G Adaptive Optical Engine DWDM transponder cards which interconnected with Juniper Networks T-series routers with 40G interfaces located at sites in Manchester and London.

The live field trial, conducted in late April 2008, carried 40G traffic generated by Virgin Media and delivered over its long-haul optical network between Manchester and London. The trial effectively positions Virgin Media as the first UK operator to offer 40G wavelength services between UK locations and, following the success of the pilot, the company is now looking to deploy. This will enable Virgin Media to continue to grow and scale new premium-quality business and entertainment services with low incremental investment.

The April 2008 trial involved carrying live 40Gbps wavelength traffic over a 350km span on the Virgin Media optical network using Nortel core optical transmission equipment and Juniper Networks T-series core routers with 40Gbps interfaces. Deploying 40Gbps technology increases the performance of both the IP/MPLS and optical networks and its overall capacity. The unique technology also helps the company control network equipment costs including installation, operations and maintenance.

The trial also demonstrated Virgin Media's ability to provide a dynamic 40G wavelength service over its entire Nortel-supplied CPL (Common Photonic Layer) 2500km nationwide network. The April trial was conducted between Virgin Media's Manchester and London Points of Presence (POPs) where the Juniper Networks high-performance T-series core routers are located, with WDM transport over Nortel CPL without regeneration. This is believed to be the first 40Gbps transport over a commercial network carrying live traffic over the 40G wavelengths in the UK (without regeneration, external dispersion compensation or costly Raman amplification) using Nortel's 40G Adaptive Optical Engine WDM transponder technology.

40Gbps wavelengths can be deployed "immediately" using Nortel systems. Virgin Media's existing Juniper T-series router core can be upgraded to 40G ports which will then be carried over the CPL network providing immediate capacity gains in the packet layer and reducing link complexity. This will enable more cost effective deployments of next generation services over this core for low incremental investment.

This is an expansion of the customer's existing Nortel-supplied optical network. CPL is already built by Virgin Media around its UK network. The provision of 40G capabilities over this network required the addition of 40G wavelength transponders at the relevant terminal locations only and operates with existing 10Gbps design rules and amplifier spacings. Live 40G traffic comes from existing Juniper routers that support the core IP network.
