BT Media and Broadcast Deploys Juniper Networks Routing Platforms for Europe's First Point-to-Multipoint IP/MPLS Broadcast Network

SUNNYVALE, Calif., May 19, 2005 - Juniper Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: JNPR) today announced that BT Media and Broadcast has selected its routing platforms to create Europe's first point-to-multipoint IP/MPLS-based (Multiprotocol Label Switching) broadcast distribution network. The network has been deployed by BT Media and Broadcast on behalf of Meridian, a regional member of ITV, the UK's leading independent national television broadcasting network.

The new network, based on Juniper Networks M320 and M10i routing platforms, is being used to transport broadcast-quality video, data files, voice and IT traffic between ITV's studios.

"This solution provides ITV with an inherently flexible, multi-purpose network that enables changes to individual transport branches within the broadcast network without interrupting the others," said John Beattie, director of sales, BT Media and Broadcast. "Juniper Networks' expertise in MPLS has supported our creation of an IP-based network that delivers first-class technical quality to ITV's viewers, in a highly competitive environment."

The MPLS solution from Juniper Networks was selected for its point-to-multipoint capability, a unique feature which enables high-quality broadcast video and other mission-critical data to be issued to numerous destinations across the network efficiently and cost-effectively. Point-to-multipoint broadcasting eliminates costly, bandwidth-hungry individual data streams between the central source and each recipient required by other approaches such as point-to-point broadcasting or multicasting.

The ability of the deployed Juniper Networks platforms to process and deliver traffic across the network without jitter and delay - critical for broadcast-quality data - was also a significant factor.

ITV's decision to move away from its existing ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) network is seen as the herald of a new era in broadcasting technology globally, as IP-based MPLS enables the fast, cost-effective delivery of converged services across a single, flexible network platform.

"By choosing to migrate its broadcast network to a flexible IP/MPLS infrastructure, ITV will gain tremendous benefits in costs, performance and efficiency," said Eddie Minshull, vice president of operations, EMEA, for Juniper Networks. "It is the embodiment of the Infranet vision - secure and assured networking for the long-term benefit of end users."
