Juniper Networks Appliances Chosen for NTT-East Ephelio-VPN Internet Solution

Major Japanese Service Provider Offers Secure and Assured SSL VPN Service Via Juniper Networks NetScreen Secure Access Appliances

SUNNYVALE, Calif., February 16, 2005 - Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: JNPR) today announced that Nippon Telegraph and Telephone East Corporation (NTT East) has deployed Juniper Networks NetScreen SA and RA series secure access appliances for one of the Ephelio-VPN SSL Kit service menus, an Internet Virtual Private Networking (VPN) solution based on Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology.

Ephelio-VPN, NTT East's Internet VPN solution, was first introduced in 2000 as Ephelio-VPN Easy Kit, an IPSec-based VPN package solution. Through the development of NTT East's PS Series of VPN authentication devices for remote access, the company offered Internet-based VPN solutions for a variety of environments, with a uniquely broad range of services.

Recently, NTT East introduced the Ephelio-VPN SSL Kit, an Internet VPN solution based on SSL-VPN. This new offering is an Internet VPN solution for users unable to take advantage of IPsec VPNs because of router, firewall or other network environment restrictions. Using NTT East's proprietary PS Card Pro security device as a VPN authentication device, the new SSL-based VPN service provides dramatically improved ease of use and stability. The earlier IPSec-based Ephelio-VPN Easy Kit utilized a Juniper Networks security appliance as part of its composition, and the new Ephelio-VPN SSL Kit is also deployed at the customer site via either the Juniper Networks NetScreen Secure Access or Remote Access Series, providing excellent cost performance, access to a wide range of applications, and rich password management features.

The PS Card Pro is a security device developed by NTT East in response to the needs of its customers for more robust security in authenticating VPN communications. In order to separate information needed for authentication from client hardware, a chip is embedded in a client ID card (the PS Card Pro) for accessing a SSL-VPN. By embedding authentication software, driver software, and other software and parameters needed for VPN communications in flash memory, VPN set-up is a simple procedure for the end user. In addition to handling VPN authentication, the card also includes additional security functionality including a personal firewall, client booting control, and other security features.

The NetScreen Secure Access and Remote Access Series from Juniper Networks feature SSL-VPN technology for high availability, performance redundancy, rich access-management features, and the industry's most advanced purpose-built IVE platform. The Secure Access and Remote Access series can be managed through Java- or Active-X-based access options and are seamlessly compatible with network connections irrespective of application type. For an additional level of security, the Secure Access appliances leverage the "host-checker" technology to assure VPN users and network administrators of complete security compliance and clearance with all network access endpoints. End-user Web browsers can also be cleared of sensitive information after every VPN session via an automatic cache clearing feature.

According to research analyst Frost & Sullivan, Juniper Networks is the Asia Pacific (including Japan) market leader in SSL VPN, with 30.9 percent market share in the third quarter of 2004. In the same report, Juniper Networks was identified as the Japanese market leader in hardware-based firewall and VPN solutions, with 34.7 percent market share.

"Japan is one of the world's leading markets in broadband penetration," said Masanori Osuga, vice president of Japan for Juniper Networks. "With increasing numbers of people accessing corporate resources in the field and from home, secure and assured remote access has become essential, affirming the vision of the Infranet. We are pleased that NTT East has chosen Juniper Networks for a part of its easy-to-use managed SSL VPN service."
