Shanghai Telecom Selects Juniper Networks for Third Phase Broadband Network Expansion

E-series Routing Platform Helps Chinese Carrier Meet Increased Demand for Value-Added Services

SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 8, 2004 - Juniper Networks Inc. (Nasdaq: JNPR) today announced that Shanghai Telecommunications has selected the E-series routing platform for the third phase in the expansion of its advanced high-speed broadband network.

This most recent deployment of the E-series in Shanghai Telecommunications' network will extend the geographical reach of broadband ADSL access in China's largest city. The deployment, which is being implemented now, also underpins a network capacity upgrade to meet growing demand for new value-added services including the Shanghai Online 2 multimedia service, also known as China VNet. Shanghai Online 2 offers video on demand, training and education content, gaming and music.

Juniper Networks announced that the E-series routing platforms were being deployed in the second phase of the broadband network expansion project in August 2002. Shanghai Telecom has also used Juniper Networks M-series as the core routing platforms since March 2001.

The E-series, which combines carrier-class routing performance with broadband subscriber management and IP services in a single platform, meets Shanghai Telecommunications' requirement for a high performance edge routing solution that scales to accommodate network growth and generates new Quality of Service (QoS)-based service revenues by providing an assured user experience.

"One of Juniper Networks longest-standing customers in China, Shanghai Telecom, was facing the challenge of a growing subscriber base and increased traffic volumes with demand for new value-added services," said Eric Yu, vice president, Greater China for Juniper Networks. "Shanghai Telecom has used the E-series in a production network for more than two years, proving that the platform has the stability, performance and feature set required for this exceptionally dynamic broadband market."
