Juniper Networks and Polycom Partner for Intelligent Broadband Video Demonstration at NetWorld+Interop 2004

Integration between Juniper Networks and Polycom Systems Enables Service Providers to Deliver Assured Video Conferencing Quality

SUNNYVALE, CA. and PLEASANTON, CA. - May 11, 2004 - Juniper Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: JNPR) and Polycom, Inc. (NASDAQ: PLCM) have collaborated to deliver an intelligent broadband video services demonstration at NetWorld+Interop 2004 in Las Vegas, May 11-13, 2004. The demonstration showcases the seamless integration between Juniper Networks SDX-300 Service Deployment System and Polycom's video systems to dynamically enhance broadband video call quality over Juniper Networks routing platforms. The integration results in deterministic capabilities that enable service providers to create new services and service delivery models.

The Juniper Networks and Polycom technology demonstration highlights the ability to control the Quality of Service (QoS) of performance-sensitive traffic, such as real-time video, as it passes over the "last mile" of a broadband network. This capability paves the way for network operators to expand their IP video services offerings, particularly to small/medium business and home office customers.

The N+I demonstration illustrates a standard, web services-based control functionality that enables broadband providers to automatically upgrade session bandwidth and QoS based on appropriate video service requirements, available network resources and subscriber service options. This integration leverages the existing functionality of Juniper Networks E-series and SDX-300 Service Deployment System, including advanced routing performance and dynamic, per flow control for key service parameters as bandwidth and QoS.

With Polycom's V500 (see May 10, 2004 announcement) and VSX 3000 video systems, and Polycom Office infrastructure components, such as the Polycom PathNavigator gatekeeper, the intelligent signaling between Polycom's infrastructure and Juniper Networks SDX-300 enables the provider's network to automatically and transparently perform admission control for video session service paths, create and enforce the required QoS policies for the E-series and deliver detailed accounting records for the video call. End users of the video services will derive significant benefits including enhanced, reliable video quality, access to new features such as H.264 video compression, and cost savings via use of a scalable IP network and new video calling system such as the Polycom V500.

"Polycom is working with service providers around the world to architect and roll out video-over-IP and other enhanced services that will reduce churn and increase per-subscriber revenue potential," said Hans Schwarz, CTO at Polycom. "Polycom's open solutions for delivering Unified Collaborative Communications integrated with Juniper Networks market-leading IP service platforms can provide business customers and service providers alike with high quality, cost-effective, and easy to manage, real-time collaborative communications that improve productivity and competitiveness."

"Symmetrical, real-time video is one of the most demanding communications applications, and one that can exploit the enhanced quality, reliability, and security that are inherent in the Infranet vision", said Pradeep Sindhu, CTO and founder at Juniper Networks. "We are excited about working closely with video collaboration market leader, Polycom, to help providers create new services and subscriber experiences that have not been feasible with the best-effort Internet."
