Taiwan's HiNet Transforms Nationwide Broadband Network with Routing Platforms from Juniper Networks

Island's Leading ISP Selects E-series to Power New Services

SUNNYVALE, Calif., 30 July, 2003 - Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: JNPR) today announced that its E-series platform has been selected by HiNet, Taiwan's leading Internet Service Provider (ISP), to drive the transformation of its nationwide broadband network.

HiNet, a unit of Chunghwa Telecom's (CHT's) Data Communication Business Group, has more than1.5 million digital subscriber line (DSL) customers. The company says the new order, which is in addition to E-series routers already deployed for more than a year, will help it double revenues from value-added services and boost subscriber numbers to 4.5 million by the end of 2003.

"HiNet has relied on the E-series solution during a period of very rapid growth in broadband demand, therefore, we are confident of its performance in a live network environment," said Yen-Sung Lee, President of CHT's Data Communication Business Group. "This new order for the E-series platform is a further step. It is an investment in empowering a rich set of broadband applications and services, ranging from video phone and video conferencing to remote monitoring for business users, and from tiered access to on-demand gaming for residential users. Revenue-earning premium services like these are the future of our transformed network."

The E-series, which combines IP routing, IP service creation and subscriber management in a single platform, was selected after competitive qualification testing. It was chosen for its reliability, wire speed performance, and scalability. A particular benefit of the E-series is its capacity for 16,000 multicast streams in a single chassis, paving the way for new multicasting services over DSL.

According to Eric Yu, vice president, Greater China, Juniper Networks, HiNet's choice of the E-series aligns it with the e-Taiwan project, which plans for the country to become fully IPv6-capable and with over six million broadband subscribers by 2007. "It also underlines Taiwan's commitment to the transition from pure broadband access to a new generation of value-added services. This transition, articulated in the Model for Integrated Network, or MINT, is the key to a profitable future for the region's service providers."
