New York State Psychiatric Institute Finds Security Cure with NetScreen
Sunnyvale, CA - May 13, 2003 - NetScreen Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq: NSCN) today announced that its integrated firewall and virtual private network (VPN) systems have been selected and installed to secure the New York State Psychiatric Institute’s network.
As a facility of the New York State Office of Mental Health, the institute is affiliated with the Columbia University Department of Psychiatry and the New York Presbyterian Hospital and operates as both a hospital and a medical school. Because of the plethora of critical research information, patient records and confidential data stored within and traversing its network, the institute faces ethical and legal pressures related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) to effectively secure its critical data resources.
After a thorough evaluation of several solutions, the institute selected NetScreen-500 integrated security systems, which integrate firewall, VPN and denial of service protection functions, to secure its network. The institute leverages the devices' VPN capabilities to create secure encrypted transmission tunnels to help ensure that critical traffic, such as data shared with outside agencies, is fully compliant with HIPAA security and privacy regulations.
“Given the complexity of our network and the importance of increasing security to meet HIPAA requirements without jeopardizing network performance or productivity across the organizations, we looked at a number of vendors. NetScreen’s highly effective firewall and VPN capabilities, high-performance throughput, easy-to-use management features and cost benefits are a perfect fit for our network,” said Chandresh Shah, director of technology at New York State Psychiatric Institute. “As soon as we put in NetScreen, we weren't seen from the outside. The majority of attacks penetrating our network simply evaporated.”
The institute is also using NetScreen-Global PRO for centralized firewall and VPN management. Using Global PRO, security administrators can monitor device performance and status, manage configurations and collect usage information.
"The graphical user interface is absolutely the best one we’ve seen," said Gerry Segal, chief information architect at New York State Psychiatric Institute. "You can manage your policies right on the screen and can see exactly where you want to put the policy. It's incredibly easy."
