Electric Lightwave Selects Juniper Networks for Multiservice Metropolitan Networks

New Nationwide Series of MANs Connects Carriers and Enterprise Customers

SUNNYVALE, CA - January 30, 2002 - Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: JNPR), a leading provider of next-generation Internet Protocol (IP) infrastructure systems, and Electric Lightwave, Inc. (Nasdaq: ELIX), a leading integrated communications provider, today announced a new series of nationwide, multiservice metropolitan area networks (MANs).

"Juniper Networks M-series routers deliver superior levels of reliability, industry-leading fast packet forwarding, and intelligent filtering critical to maintaining network integrity for our customers. These routers are providing peering today for inter-exchange carriers, and we can offer additional services including MPLS for provisioning parallel data, voice, and transit networks over a single IP network," commented Mike Eastridge, manager, data engineering at Electric Lightwave.

Juniper Networks M5, M10 and M20 Internet routers all leverage Juniper Networks Internet Processor II ASIC combined with JUNOS Internet software giving service providers and carriers the ability to add new profitable services to existing services with no performance hits. Electric Lightwave's network now has the capability to simultaneously deliver a wide range of value-added IP services including transparent LAN, Point to Point, and Quality of Service (QoS) in Resource Reservation Protocol over a single IP network at scale. This proven performance without compromise ensures Electric Lightwave's customers retain data security, service, stability, and reliability.

Electric Lightwave will also use Juniper Networks IP infrastructure to simplify network management and provisioning and reduce overall costs of operation. Operational costs are reduced through simplified network design cycles, common software and network management capabilities, and centrally administered chassis-based updates versus legacy card-based management. All Juniper Networks systems fully integrate with existing remote management equipment for additional cost protection. At peering locations where Electric Lightwave links with other networks, the company easily turns on filtering functions, such as monitoring, to thwart distributed denial of service (DoS) attacks for increased security. These filters are fully functional even under heavy network traffic load with multiple concurrent services operating in the background.
