Title: XAMPP Insecure Default Password Disclosure Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

XAMPP is an Apache distribution designed for easy installation. It includes MySQL, PHP, and Perl CGI support.

An insecure default password disclosure vulnerability affects XAMPP. This issue is due to a failure of the application to properly secure access to default passwords.

The problem presents itself as the 'xampp/security.php' script is globally available through the Web by default; the offending script contains the default passwords for numerous applications installed.

The phpMyAdmin 'pma' user and the MySQL 'root' user default passwords are blank. The FTP 'nobody' user has a password 'lampp' and the 'xampp' administrator account for Tomcat is set to 'xampp'. All of these default passwords are presented on the offending Web accessible script.

It should be noted that due to the nature of the affected script, it is possible that the current passwords may be revealed by it as well; the script may query a database for the current passwords, which may cause all previously changed passwords to be presented as well. This is not currently confirmed.

An attacker may leverage this issue to gain access to the default passwords for many utilities installed by the affected application, including the MySQL 'root' user, the phpMyAdmin 'pma' user, the FTP 'nobody' user and the Tomcat administrator.
