Cloud Services provider takes business to the next level with SD-WAN

Momentum Telecom earned its spot on the Inc. 5000 as it evolved from a business phone startup to an established managed services provider. Today, Momentum delivers unified communications as a service and managed network services to thousands of midsize and large enterprises around the globe.

The Momentum Navigator SD-WAN solution, based on the Juniper Session Smart Router, is poised to fuel the company’s next wave of growth.

Challenge

Creating sticky customer relationships

Mark Marquez, executive vice president of technology at Momentum Telecom, recognized SD-WAN was an opportunity for profitable growth.

But Momentum wanted to offer more than a me-too service. The managed services provider wanted to take SD-WAN to the next level, not only providing agile, secure, and resilient connectivity to customers’ distributed locations, but also with breakthrough economics and operational simplicity that would provide a distinct competitive advantage.

Solution

Creating a flexible service edge to meet more customer needs

“The Session Smart Router was something the other providers didn’t have, and it allowed us to differentiate our SD-WAN service,” says Marquez. “The Session Smart Router doesn’t use tunnels. It is built from the ground up as a router. It uses adaptive encryption. It takes a Zero Trust approach.”

With Juniper’s next-generation SD-WAN solution, Momentum offers different SD-WAN packages that enable the company to grow revenue per customer. At the base level, customers can gain more visibility into circuit health. They can upgrade to managed routing, which allows a flexible choice of fiber, carrier Ethernet, or 4G/LTE. Or customers can choose a fully managed SD-WAN service that delivers optimized user experiences and prioritization for voice and other critical applications.

Momentum built a tunnel-free SD-WAN service with Juniper, reducing complexity and generating bandwidth savings it can pass onto its customers. And, because the Session Smart Router runs on Juniper-certified white box hardware, customer deployment is simplified.

“We can use the same customer premises equipment for the network interface device, unified communications gateway, managed router, and SD-WAN,” says Marquez. “It’s more efficient and opens the door for us to upgrade customers without adding more equipment.”

Outcome

SD-WAN drives new revenue and expands geographic reach

Momentum expects to expand its addressable market with an SD-WAN service that it can deliver and manage profitably anywhere in the world.

As a result, Momentum projects that it will quadruple SD-WAN sales as a result of adding the Session Smart Router to its portfolio. It expects that its managed WAN services business will double because of Session Smart Router’s flexible licensing.

The company sees significant operational improvements resulting from Juniper’s Zero Touch Provisioning, single pane of glass for support, and better network edge visibility. Remote management eliminates costly truck rolls and resolves service issues faster.

Momentum Telecom was an early adopter of the Session Smart Router, and the strength of the relationship has continued through the Juniper acquisition. “We work with many of the same people, and the increase in marketing, training, and other resources has been beneficial,” says Marquez.
