Create Reboot-Only Schedules for Switches

Use the below instructions to create reboot-only schedules for switches.

You can now schedule reboot-only operations for switches through the Firmware Upgrades page (Organization > Firmware Upgrades), without requiring a firmware upgrade. This enables you to orchestrate planned switch reboots—for example, to apply configuration changes that require a reboot or to perform routine maintenance—during a scheduled maintenance window.

You can either reboot switches immediately or schedule a reboot for a future date and time. You can target specific switch models for the reboot, and you can use match criteria (switch name, switch role, or campus fabric role) to further narrow the scope.

To schedule a switch reboot without a firmware upgrade:

  1. Click Organization > Firmware Upgrade.
  2. From the Firmware Upgrade page, select the Switches tab.
  3. Click Schedule Upgrade.
  4. Select the reboot scope.
    1. To reboot switches deployed across the entire organization, enable the Entire Org toggle.
    2. To reboot switches deployed in specific sites, click the + button, select the sites where you need to reboot switches, and then click Add.
    All the device models available for the selected scope are listed.
  5. Enable the Reboot without upgrade toggle.
  6. Select the switch models that you want to reboot.
  7. If you want to reboot only specific switches belonging to the selected model, do the following:
    1. Enable the Match Criteria option. This option allows you to define certain additional parameters that need to be matched for a switch to be included in a reboot schedule.
    2. Define the parameters to be matched. They include:
      • Switch Name—Specify a switch name to be matched. Optionally, specify an offset value, which indicates the starting character within the switch name (0 being the first character). For example, to match the keyword IDF-2 in the switch hostname JNPR-IDF-2, enter JNPR-IDF-2 as the switch name and set the offset value to 5.

      • Role—You can either select a switch role that is already defined by a user, or define a new role.

      • Campus Fabric Role—Select a campus fabric role from the drop-down list.

        Note: If multiple parameters (for example, a Switch Name and a Role) are specified, reboot is triggered only if all the specified parameters are matched. The keywords are case-sensitive.
    3. Click Apply.
      Match criteria configuration is available per device model.
    Note:

    For Virtual Chassis switches, a full stack reboot is triggered, and all Virtual Chassis members are rebooted together, regardless of the order in which member reboots are scheduled.

  8. Specify the reboot schedule details by referring to the table below:

    Select the reboot schedule:

    • Reboot Now: Choose this option if you want to execute a reboot immediately. This is the default option.

    • Reboot Later: Choose this option to schedule a switch reboot for a future date and time. You need to also specify a date and time using the date picker in the Image Installation Time field.

    How should devices reboot?

    Select a reboot strategy. These strategies will be applied separately to each reboot (generated for each site-model-SKU combination). The following strategies are available:

    • Simultaneous: Reboots all devices at once without any specific priority.

    • Phased: Reboots the switches in user-defined phases. If you select this option, you need to specify the phases in percentages. For example, to reboot 100 devices in four phases, you can specify the values 5, 25, 50, 100 in the Reboot Canary Phases field.

    • Serial: Reboots the switches in a sequential, random order.

    Reboot Max Failure percentage

    (Expand the More Settings section to access this option.)

    Maximum percentage of devices allowed to fail reboot (generated for each site-model-SKU combination). If the number of failures exceeds the set percentage, the reboot process is canceled for the remaining devices in the current run.
  9. Select the I accept the End User License Agreement check box.
  10. Click Review.
  11. After reviewing the reboot schedule, click Schedule.

You can also cancel scheduled reboots or edit the reboot date from the Reboot Only section of the Firmware Upgrades page. For more information, refer to Manage Switch Upgrade and Reboot Schedules.
