Marvis Minis for Wired Networks

Marvis Minis validations for wired networks run directly on Juniper EX switches to proactively validate end‑to‑end wired connectivity before any actual users or devices connect. By simulating a physically connected client, Marvis Minis determines if the client can successfully complete tests for DHCP, ARP, DNS, and CURL. This eliminates the need to connect a physical client to a switch to troubleshoot VLAN reachability—a process that can be both time-consuming and labor intensive with numerous VLANs. Minis simulates the login of wired clients and their subsequent operations to assess whether the following services are operational:

  • RADIUS

  • DHCP

  • Address Resolution Protocol (ARP)

  • Domain Name System (DNS)

  • Curl

Validations for Wired Networks

Marvis Minis runs validations on every switch (that supports Marvis Minis) within a site. These validations focus on up to 16 VLANs, prioritizing those with the highest levels of client activity. In environments utilizing EVPN, the validations are specifically performed on access switches. However, in other deployment scenarios, Marvis Minis extends these checks across all types of switches.

Note:

To avoid overlap, VLANs tested as part of the wireless network validations are excluded from the wired network validations.

Marvis Minis validates the wired network using the following steps:

  1. Initiates an authentication request from the switch as a client and verifies that the RADIUS or authentication server is reachable and responsive.

  2. Sends a DHCP request and reports whether the DHCP server responds in time and returns a valid IP, gateway, and DNS parameters.

  3. Verifies that the ARP process for the client's IP is successful.

  4. Resolves DNS queries against all the DNS server IP addresses received in the DHCP offer.

  5. Uses HTTP/HTTPS curl tests to verify that external URLs are reachable. Marvis Minis by default tests four applications for application reachability and Internet connectivity:

    • Microsoft Teams (https://teams.microsoft.com)

    • Office (https://office.com)

    • Apple's captive portal (https://captive.apple.com)

    • Google's connectivity check endpoint (https://connectivitycheck.gstatic.com)
