Hierarchy Level

Set an Ethernet segment identifier (ESI) value for an integrated routing and bridging (IRB) interface that is configured as a Layer 3 (L3) EVPN virtual gateway.

In an EVPN-VXLAN network configuration, when you set a virtual-gateway-address for the IRB interfaces on an L3 gateway device, the device automatically generates an ESI value from the autonomous system (AS) number and the VXLAN network identifier (VNI). The device uses that ESI when advertising the virtual gateway address. The automatically generated ESI values provide load-balancing and redundancy for the virtual gateway address in the fabric. The device advertises other IRB addresses without an ESI value, so those IRB interfaces are reachable only via the advertising L3 gateway.

However, with external BGP (EBGP), the autonomous system (AS) number is different on each of the L3 gateways, which produces different automatically generated ESI values. You can use this virtual-gateway-esi statement to manually configure the same ESI on all of the L3 gateway devices, and override automatically assigning an ESI value. The device uses this manually assigned ESI when advertising the IRB interface virtual gateway address.

For example:

ESI value for the IRB interface.

Specify for the interfaces in the ESI to operate in all-active multihoming mode.
