Predict FPC Reset
Use this topic to understand how Juniper Routing Director uses AI-ML to predict FPC resets in Juniper devices.
Routing Director uses AI-ML to proactively identify potential Flexible PIC Concentrator (FPC) resets in Juniper devices by analyzing packet Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) and aliasing errors.
FPC resets can result in traffic disruption, service degradation, and network instability. Predicting FPC Reset helps network operators to:
- Identify warning signs before an FPC reset occurs.
- Reduce unplanned outages and emergency maintenance events.
- Improve operational visibility through intelligent log correlation.
- Minimize false positives by validating relationships between multiple log events.
- Accelerate root-cause identification and remediation.
- Improve network reliability and service availability.
To predict FPC resets, Routing Director continuously monitors system logs to identify correlated patterns between packet CRC errors and conditions that precede an FPC failure. When such patterns are identified, a predictive alert is generated to warn of a possible upcoming FPC reset. You can view this alert on the Events page (Observability > Health > Events). Among other information, the alert includes:

To predict FPC reset, you must enable AI-ML and root cause analysis (RCA) when you install the Routing Director cluster.

Predicting FPC reset is applicable only on MX Series devices using XMCHIP-based line cards (for example, MPCE3E-3D) that use XMCHIP as the fabric interface block.
Figure 1 shows a predictive alert indicating an upcoming FPC reset along with recommendation.
The alert is displayed approximately 15 to 20 minutes after the first log indicative of an FPC reset is detected.
