About the Reports Page (Offline Topology Map)

To access the Reports page, select Planning > Networks > Offline Models > Model-Name > Open > Simulation > Reports.

Planner allows you to simulate failure scenarios for your network model to understand how your network behaves under failure conditions. Routing Director generates a report for each simulation to help you analyze the impact.

On this page, you can view and download what-if failure simulation reports. In addition, you can visualize changes directly on the topology map, as it is integrated with the offline topology.

Note: You can also access simulation reports from Planning > Networks > Offline Models > Model-Name > Reports. You can view and download exhaustive failure simulation reports and what-if failure simulation reports here. However, you cannot visualize changes on the topology map because this page is outside the offline topology view. For more information, See View Reports.

The Reports page has the following tabs:

  • Explorer Tab—Displays the list of available What-If failure simulation reports. The Explorer tab opens by default when you access the Reports page. For more information, see Tasks You Can Perform on the Explorer Tab.

  • Demand Change, Link Change, and Tunnel Change Tabs—Display detailed analysis of individual simulation results. When you select one of the following reports in the Explorer tab, the report opens in a new tab named after the selected report:

    • Demand change report

    • Link change report

    • Tunnel change report

Note: We recommended that you view the latest What-if failure simulation reports to analyze your network model's response to the failure. Each What-If simulation generates a report based on the current model state. As a result, older reports might contain different values because they reflect the model state at the time the simulation was run.

Tasks You Can Perform on the Explorer Tab

  • View the list of What-if failure simulation reports—On the Explorer tab, view the list of reports generated for each what-if failure simulation. The Reports table includes the following columns:

    • Report—Displays the reports generated for each What-If failure simulation. Reports are listed in reverse chronological order, with the most recent simulation report displayed first. Click the expand arrow button to view the associated demand change, link change, and tunnel change report. For more information, see Tasks You Can Perform on Demand Change, Link Change, and Tunnel Change Tabs.

    • Description—Displays the description entered at the time of running the what-if failure simulation.

    • Created—Displays the date and time at which the report is generated.

    • Filename—Displays the filename of the report. Click the link to download the report.

    • Size—Displays the size of the report.

  • Refresh the page—Click the Refresh button present at the bottom-left corner of the reports table to refresh the page and load the latest reports (both existing and newly generated) in your network.

  • Move the reports page—You can move the Reports page and place it anywhere on the offline topology page, making it easier to view topology changes and the simulation report side by side.

  • View the details of each report—Click the expand arrow next to a what-if failure simulation report to view the reports generated for the simulation.

    The following reports are generated when you run a what-if failure simulation:

    1. Demand change report. For more information, see Demand Change.

    2. Link change report. For more information, see Link Change.

    3. Tunnel change report. For more information, see Tunnel Change.

    Note: To suit your visualization needs, you can configure the following on the Settings page (Planning > Networks > Offline Models > Model-Name > Open > Simulation > Topology Map > Settings (gear icon)):
    • Link label

    • Link color

    For consistent visualization, we recommend that you use the same metric for both link label and link color. For example, if you select Computed Demand Utilization option of link label and Computed Tunnel Utilization option for link color, the labels and colors displayed on the topology map might not align. However, you can customize these settings as needed. See View Network Topology Details.

  • Common tasks you can perform on all report tabs—You can perform the following tasks on Demand Change, Link Change, and Tunnel change tabs:

    • Download a report—You can download the report by clicking the Download button. A CSV file is downloaded to your local system.

    • Customize table columns—You can customize the table columns based on your preference by clicking the vertical ellipsis icon at the top-right corner of the table and using the following options:

      • Show/Hide Columns—Select or deselect the columns you want to display in the table.

      • Reset Preference—Restore the table to its default column settings.

    • Modify displayed table rows and navigate pages—Set the number of rows (50, 100, 200,500 or 1000) to be displayed in the table in the Display drop-down list provided at the bottom right-corner of the table. If multiple pages of rows are present, use the arrow heads to traverse through the pages or enter a page number to view the entries listed on that page.

Tasks You Can Perform on Demand Change, Link Change, and Tunnel Change Tabs

The following sections describe the tasks you can perform on each What-if Simulation report (Demand Change, Link Change, and Tunnel Change), which opens in a separate tab.

Demand Change

The Demand Change report includes information about demands that were impacted by the failure, original cost and new cost, original path and new path for each demand, original and new number of hops required by the demand to traverse after it is rerouted due to failure and so on. See Table 1.

When you click the Demand Change report, the report opens in a new Demand Change tab. The Routing Director marks failed devices, links, or SRLGs as F on the topology map. These markers help you identify the failed elements and analyze the resulting network changes.

You can perform the following task on the Demand Change tab:

  • View Demand Path on the topology map—When you select a row (a single demand), the original and new paths of the selected row are highlighted on the topology map. The links in the original path are highlighted in pink and those links in the new path are highlighted in green. The links that are part of both the new and original path, are highlighted in cyan. The Routing Director marks the source and destination nodes with S and D, respectively.

    Note: When you open the Demand change report, the link labels (Settings > Links > Label) and link colors (Settings > Links > Link Color) automatically switch to the Demand layer.

Link Change

The link change report includes information about links affected by the failure, such as links that went down and those links with bandwidth utilization changes due to traffic rerouting, along with the difference between the previous and updated utilization values for Layer 3 (demand) and Layer 2 (tunnel) and so on. See Table 1.

When you click the Link Change report, the report opens in a new link change tab. The Routing Director marks failed devices, links, or SRLGs as F on the topology map. Routing Director also highlights links affected by the failure by displaying those links with thicker lines, while unaffected links retain their normal appearance. These visual indicators help you identify the failed elements and analyze the resulting network changes.

You can perform the following tasks on the link change tab:

  • Layer-based link visualization—You can use the drop-down list to select a layer (Demand or Tunnel), and the Routing Director automatically synchronizes the link utilization value, link labels, and link colors on the topology map to the selected layer. While the old values, updated values, and differences between the new and old utilization values for demand and tunnel are available in the report tables, the drop-down list controls which layer’s data is actively visualized on the topology map, improving clarity and focus during analysis.

    Note: When you open the Link change report, the link labels (Settings > Links > Label) and link colors (Settings > Links > Link Color) automatically switch to the selected layer.

    If you change the link label or link color metric to a value other than Computed Demand Utilization or Computed Tunnel Utilization, only the links that are not affected by what-if failure simulation are updated. Links impacted by the what-if failure simulation continue to display the link label and link color corresponding to the selected layer.

  • Display utilization (util) or utilization difference (diff) values on the topology map—Use the Util and Diff button to view either the new utilization values or the difference between the original and new utilization values on the topology map.

    • Util view—Click the Util button to display the new utilization values calculated after the failure of one or more devices, links, or SRLGs. Routing Director changes the link color of affected links based on the new utilization values and the configured Legend ranges for the selected layer. For more information, see Default Legend ranges.

    • Diff view—Click the Diff button to display the difference between the original and new utilization values for each affected link on the topology map. Routing Director changes the color of affected link ends to show the expected impact of traffic re-routing caused by the failure simulation. The link-end colors indicate the expected increase or decrease in utilization.

      Routing Director uses a shade of green for link ends that experience lower utilization and a shade of pink for link ends that experience higher utilization. These green and pink highlight colors are unique to Diff view and are independent of the configured Legend ranges.

      The link label displays the percentage utilization change, where a positive value indicates increased utilization and a negative value indicates decreased utilization.

    You can select the layer (Demand or Tunnel) to display the corresponding Util or Diff values on the topology map.

Note: By default, link utilization is color-coded as follows:
  • Gray (neutral or 0)

  • Blue (0–20),

  • Green (20–40)

  • Yellow (40–60)

  • Orange (60–80)

  • Red (80–100)

You can customize these color ranges as needed by clicking the Legend icon available at the bottom-right corner of the topology map. You can click and drag the slider handles to modify the color ranges.

Tunnel Change

The tunnel change report includes information about tunnels that were impacted by the failure, original cost and new cost, original path and new path for each tunnel, original and new number of hops required by the tunnel to traverse after it is rerouted due to failure and so on. See Table 1.

When you click the Tunnel Change report, the report opens in a new tunnel change tab. The Routing Director marks failed devices, links, or SRLGs as F on the topology map. These markers help you identify the failed elements and analyze the resulting network changes.

You can perform the following task on the tunnel change tab:

  • View Tunnel Path on the topology map—When you select a row (a single tunnel), the original and new paths of the selected row are highlighted on the topology map.
