Add a Test Agent

A Test Agent is a software that is installed on your network device, and it acts as a measurement point in your network. These Test Agents are deployed at strategic locations in your network to evaluate the quality of your network by collecting metric data for preconfigured key performance indicators (KPIs). For more information, see Test Agents Overview.

There are two types of Test Agents:

  • Test Agent Application—A lightweight Test Agent that runs within a docker container on an existing operating system. This type of Test Agent does not support interface configuration and certain advanced use cases. You can deploy a Test Agent Application natively in an x86 platform or as a docker container.

  • Test Agent Appliance—A full-fledged Test Agent with built-in operating system that allows full control over network configuration and supports advanced functionalities. You can deploy a Test Agent Appliance as a virtual machine or a custom x86 hardware.

Add a Test Agent Application:

To add a Test Agent Application:

  1. Navigate to the Test Agents (Inventory > Active Assurance > Test Agents) page.

  2. Click the Add Test Agent button.

The Add Test Agent page appears.

    Note:

Fields marked with an asterisk (*) are mandatory.

  3. Select Test Agent Application as type.

  4. Specify the Name, Tags, and Description for the Test Agent.

  5. Click Create.

A message confirms that Routing Director has successfully added the Test Agent, and you are redirected to the Test Agent Details (Inventory > Active Assurance > Test Agents > Test Agent Details) page.

On the Download & Run tab, view the version of the Test Agent Application. By default, the version is prepopulated with the latest version of the Test Agent Application.

  6. On the Download & Run tab, copy the secret key generated by Routing Director by using the Copy button next to the Secret text box. You can use this secret key in the docker environment for authenticating the Test Agent Application.

The secret key is displayed only once. If you return to the Download, Install & Run tab later, you need to regenerate the secret key by using the Regenerate button.

  7. Copy the commands by using the Copy button to download, install, and run the Test Agent Application in the Docker environment.

  8. Log in to Docker environment and execute the copied secret key and commands in the Docker environment, which allows the Test Agent Application to establish a connection with Routing Director. For more information, see Install Test Agent Application.

Now, Routing Director discovers the Test Agent Application, and the status of the Test Agent Application becomes online.

Add a Test Agent Appliance

To add a Test Agent Appliance:

  1. Navigate to the Test Agents (Inventory > Active Assurance > Test Agents) page.

A message confirms that Routing Director has successfully added the Test Agent Appliance, and you are redirected to the Test Agent Details (Inventory > Active Assurance > Test Agents > Test Agent Details) page.

  6. On the Download & Run tab, copy the secret key generated by Routing Director by using the Copy button next to the Secret text box. You can use this secret key in the virtualization platforms to authenticate the Test Agent Appliance.

The secret key is displayed only once. If you return to the Download, Install & Run tab later, you need to regenerate the secret key by using the Regenerate button.

  7. Copy the Cloud-init configuration by using the Copy button at the bottom-right of the Cloud-init configuration text box and use this configuration on various virtualization platforms. In addition, you can enable the Include examples checkbox to view a complete template with a reference of possible Cloud-init configurations.

  8. Follow the installation procedures dedicated to any virtualization platform and configure the cloud-init metadata to setup Test Agent Appliance, which allows Routing Director to discover the Test Agent Appliance, and the status of the Test Agent Appliance becomes online. For more information, see Install Test Agent Appliance.
