Upgrade to the Auto-updating Edge in Juniper Apstra 5.1

In Juniper Apstra 5.1, you can upgrade from the Edge that comes with Apstra (0.5.0), to an auto-updating Edge version (0.13.2). This upgrade makes future Edge updates hands-off.

Juniper Apstra 5.1 ships with Edge version 0.5.0. Apstra Cloud Services (ACS) introduces an auto-updating Edge functionality that keeps the Edge container updated to the latest version. This feature makes the Edge installation and update process hands-off. However, the included version (0.5.0) of the Edge does not support this capability.

To use this feature, you must update from Edge 0.5.0 to 0.13.2 or later. Use the following steps to install an auto-updating Edge version.

Note:

This process uses Edge version 0.13.2. The version that you download might be a later version.

  1. Download the image for the latest Edge from the Juniper Downloads portal.

Ensure that the download location is in the same directory as the Apstra server (e.g. the /home directory).

  2. Untar the image.
    • This creates the following directory: apstra-edge-0.13.2.
  3. Move to the newly created directory containing the docker image.
  4. Run the docker load < apstra-edge-0.13.2 command.
This makes the new version available in the Apstra UI.
  5. Run the docker images command to verify that the new version is loaded.
  6. (Optional) Run the docker ps | grep edge command to view active docker containers.
You might still see version 0.5.0, but this updates after a few moments.
  7. Access your ACS Organization view at the following link https://dc.ai.juniper.net.
  8. Create a new Edge, as shown here https://www.juniper.net/documentation/us/en/software/juniper-apstra-cloud-services/user-guide/topics/topic-map/adopt-apstra-edge.html.
  9. In the Apstra UI, navigate to Platform > Apstra Edge.
  10. Click the plus icon and fill in the fields to define the Edge, as shown here https://www.juniper.net/documentation/us/en/software/apstra5.1/apstra-user-guide/topics/task/launch-edge-container-in-apstra.html.
  11. Click Create.
  12. This process automatically defaults to the included 0.5.0 image. To change this, edit the newly created Edge instance.
  13. In the Image name field, enter apstra-edge: 0.13.2 (or whichever container version you downloaded.
  14. Click Update.
  15. In the ACS UI in the Inventory page, verify that the Edge statuses for the 0.13.2 edge show Connected.
