QFX5250 Ports and Interfaces

This topic describes the ports on the QFX5250 switch and their corresponding Junos OS Evolved interfaces.

Interface Naming on the QFX5250

The ports on the QFX5250 switch have interfaces associated with them in Junos OS Evolved. These interfaces follow the below naming convention:

type-fpc/pic/port:channel

  • type—This refers to the media type of the interface. For some interfaces, the media type depends on the transceiver plugged into the physical port.
    • et—200/400/800/1600 GbE interface
  • fpc—Flexible PIC Concentrator. On the QFX5250, FPC 0 contains all network interfaces.
  • pic—Physical Interface Card. On the QFX5250:
    • PIC 0 consists of sixty-four OSFP ports (1600G/800G/400G/200G)
    • PIC 0 also consists of two SFP28 ports (supports 25G and 10G transmission)
  • port—You can check the port number from the front panel of the QFX5250.
  • channel—This is only applicable to channelized (breakout) interfaces. For example, OSFP ports can be broken out into 2x800G, 4x400G, 8x200G channels. For all other non-channelized interfaces, this option is absent.

See the Hardware Compatibility Tool for a list of all supported optics for the QFX5250.

Interfaces on the QFX5250

Each network port on the QFX5250 has a unique interface on Junos OS Evolved associated with it.

The examples below show the actual hardware or transceivers plugged into a device and how Junos OS Evolved creates the corresponding interfaces. The output has been truncated to only show the relevant sections.

The following is an output of show chassis hardware for the QFX5250 liquid-cooled model:

The following is an output of show interfaces terse for the QFX5250 liquid-cooled model:

In these examples:

  • The interfaces for OSFP ports (PIC 0) are automatically created (et-0/0/0 to et-0/0/63). These 64 OSFP ports support speeds from 100G up to 1.6T depending on the transceiver plugged in.
  • The two SFP28 transceivers are plugged into ports 64 and 65 (PIC 0). Junos OS creates corresponding interfaces (et-0/0/64 and et-0/0/65). These ports support 25G and 10G transmission speeds.
  • Port et-0/0/8 shows Admin and Link up, indicating the port is enabled and has an active link.
  • Each physical interface has a corresponding logical interface (indicated by .0 suffix) configured for ethernet-switching.
  • The management interface (re0:mgmt-0) is operational with IP address 10.221.86.70/23.
