Configure Junos OS Evolved on the QFX5140
This topic guides you through the initial configuration of your QFX5140 by using the Junos OS Evolved CLI.
The QFX5140 is shipped with the Junos OS Evolved preinstalled and ready to be configured when the switch is powered on. Two solid-state drives (SSDs) store the boot image to provide redundancy. If the primary disk fails, Junos OS Evolved boots from the secondary disk.
A USB storage device can be inserted into the USB slot in the front panel of the chassis. The switch also has two M.2-based solid-state drives (SSDs) that act as the primary boot devices (nvme0n1 and nvme1n1). When the switch boots, it first attempts to load the Junos OS Evolved image from the USB flash memory drive if it detects this drive. If the attempt fails because the USB flash drive is missing or for some other reason, the switch tries the primary boot device and then the secondary boot device.
You can use the Junos OS Evolved command line interface (CLI) to perform the initial configuration.

Configure Root Authentication and Management Interface from the CLI
The QFX5140 switch ships with factory-default settings that enable zero-touch provisioning (ZTP). These settings load as soon as you power on the switch. In this case, as we configure the switch manually, we disable ZTP during the initial configuration.
When you don't use ZTP, you must perform the initial configuration of a QFX5140 switch through the console port (CONSOLE) using the Junos OS Evolved command-line interface (CLI).
Gather the following information before configuring the device:
-
switch's host and domain name
-
IP address and subnet mask for the management and loopback interfaces
-
IP address of a default gateway for the management network
-
IP address of a DNS server
-
Root user's password
To configure root authentication and the management interface:
This procedure connects the switch to the network but does not enable it to forward traffic. For complete information about enabling the switch to forward traffic, including examples, see the Junos OS Evolved configuration guides.
