6-Port, 8-Port, and 16-Port Gigabit Ethernet uPIMs

Gigabit Ethernet uPIMs are available in three versions—the 6-port Gigabit Ethernet uPIM, shown in Figure 10, which uses small form-factor pluggable (SFP) transceivers to allow the use of different connectors, and the 8-port and 16-port Gigabit Ethernet uPIMs, shown in Figure 11, and Figure 12 which provide RJ-45 connectors. Gigabit Ethernet uPIMs provide port density and are supported on J4350 and J6350 Services Routers.

Features. Gigabit Ethernet uPIMs provide the following key features:

• Link speed for 8-port and 16-port Gigabit Ethernet uPIMs is configurable to 10, 100, or 1000 Mbps, and transmission mode is configurable to half or full duplex. The 6-port SFP Gigabit Ethernet uPIM cannot be manually configured—it is set at 1000 Mbps and full duplex.
• Autonegotiation.
• 6-port Gigabit Ethernet uPIMs use SFP transceivers to allow different connectors to be used on uPIM ports. The 6-port Gigabit Ethernet uPIM supports 1000Base-SX, 1000Base-LX, 1000Base-TX, and 1000Base-T copper SFP. It does not support or 1000Base-LH SFPs.

  1000Base-SX and 1000Base-LX SFP transceivers have the following characteristics:

  • Duplex LC/PC connector (Rx and Tx).
  • Optical interface support—See Table 16.
• 8-port and 16-port Gigabit Ethernet uPIMs (and 6-port uPIM SFPs) support 1000Base-T RJ-45 connectors.

Limitations. Gigabit Ethernet uPIMs have the following limitations:

• Gigabit Ethernet uPIMs do not support SNMP.
• Configure Gigabit Ethernet uPIM interfaces up to a maximum MTU size of 9014 bytes.

Installation. Gigabit Ethernet uPIMs can be inserted in any slot on the J4350 and J6350 Services Routers (unlike the 1-port Gigabit Ethernet ePIM, which must be inserted in high-speed slots only). Throughput is higher when the uPIM is inserted in a high-speed slot. High-speed slots are slots 3 and 6 on the J4350 router, and slots 2, 3, 5, and 6 on the J6350 router.

Because the 16-port Gigabit Ethenet uPIM is two slots high, you can install a maximum of two 16-port uPIMs in a J4350 or J6350 chassis. You cannot install a 16-port uPIM in the top slots (slots 1 and 4) because the connector is on the lower half of the uPIM so that a uPIM installed in slot 2, for example, extends up into slot 1.

Interface LEDs. For 8-port and 16-port Gigabit Ethernet uPIMs, the activity LED is located on the left side of each port, and the link LED is located on the right side of each port. For the 6-port Gigabit Ethernet uPIM, the LEDs are located to the right of each port, with the link LED above the activity LED. Table 15 describes the meaning of the LEDs.
