Physical Interface Modules Overview

A Physical Interface Module (PIM) is a network interface card that is fixed or interchangeably installed on a J-series Services Router, to provide physical connections to a LAN or a WAN. The PIM receives incoming packets from the network and transmits outgoing packets to the network. Each PIM is equipped with a dedicated network processor that forwards incoming data packets to the Routing Engine, and receives outgoing data packets from the Routing Engine. During this process, the PIM performs framing and line-speed signaling for its medium type.

The PIMs on J-series Services Routers include network interfaces for E1, E3, T1, T3, Fast Ethernet, serial, ADSL, G.SHDSL, and ISDN media and a license for one physical interface port.

You must purchase an additional license if you need a second physical port. For license details, see Installing and Managing J-series Licenses.

For information about network interfaces, see the interfaces overview and configuration information in the J-series Services Router Basic LAN and WAN Access Configuration Guide.
