Log Rotation Overview
Log rotation allows you to automatically export and delete files on the C Series Controller local disk so that you can save all information without any risk of it being overwritten. To control resources on the local C Series Controller, you can configure the SRC to automatically upload files normally stored on the local disk to a remote FTP server. After the file upload is successfully completed, the files are automatically deleted from the local disk. This feature is especially useful for uploading and storing accounting flat files; however, you can also use it with log files and saved configuration files.
Multiple file upload clients can be configured on a single C Series Controller. In addition, multiple FTP servers can be configured for storing files. File uploading is enabled by using the system file-uploading-specifications statement. Using this configuration statement, you specify regular intervals for starting file uploads, as well as specifying the number of the most recent files you want to keep resident on the C Series Controller disk after the upload successfully completes.
If the remote server fails to respond, fails to validate the username credentials, or a file uploading task hangs, the SRC software retries the upload. The retry frequency is configurable. If the next scheduled file upload begins while a previous file upload is still in progress, the new file upload task terminates the task in progress and begins uploading files to the remote FTP server. If a file is only partially uploaded, the file upload client in the SRC software attempts to delete the file on the remote server. To avoid loss of files if such an event occurs, you can configure the SRC software to keep n number of the most recently time-stamped files on the local C Series Controller disk so that you may recover a corrupted file. After the files are successfully uploaded, the specified n number of files are compressed and moved to a subdirectory of the current directory on the local disk. All other files are deleted.
If you do not configure a remote FTP server, the file upload client compresses the most recently updated files and stores them in a backup directory.
The file upload client does not verify whether or not the remote FTP server has enough space to store the uploaded files. The upload is done on a best-effort basis. One FTP server may be shared by multiple SRC hosts (upload clients). All these SRC hosts may share the same remote server, or have the same file-uploading configuration. If all the SRC hosts attempt to upload files to the server simultaneously, the server can become overloaded and as a result, file uploads are likely to fail. To avoid this, we recommend you use the random-delay option to set up the upload clients to interleave file uploads.
