Replacing a DC Power Supply on VXA Series Content Engines

The VXA Series Content Engines are supplied with dual-redundant, hot-swappable DC power supplies as standard equipment. If one power supply fails, the second power supply assumes responsibility for the entire power load. Alternatively, VXA Series Content Engines can be equipped with dual-redundant AC power supplies.

Before you remove a power supply, be aware of the following:

    • The minimum number of power supplies must be present in the appliance at all times.
    • After powering off a power supply, wait at least 60 seconds before turning it back on.

Caution: Do not leave a power supply slot empty for more than 30 minutes while the appliance is operational. For proper airflow and to prevent thermal shutdown of the operating power supply unit, each power supply slot must contain either a power supply or a blank panel. If you remove a power supply, you must install a replacement power supply or a blank panel shortly after the removal.

To hot-swap the power supply (see Figure 1):

    1. Turn off the site circuit breaker for the power supply to power it off. An alarm may sound if the appliance is on and running with both power supplies.
    2. Attach an electrostatic discharge (ESD) grounding strap to your bare wrist, and connect the strap to an ESD point on the appliance or the rack.
    3. Remove the grounding cable from the power supply.
    4. Remove the power cables from the power supply.
    5. Remove the small power supply locking tab from the chassis by loosening the thumbscrew located to the left between the two power supplies.
    6. The power supply has a pull handle and a locking tab. Press the locking tab to the right while you pull out the power supply using the handle.
    7. Insert the new power supply into the appliance. Hold the power supply locking tab to the right until the power supply is fully seated.
    8. Move the power supply locking tab to the left to ensure the power supply is locked in the appliance.
    9. Replace the chassis locking tab and tighten the thumbscrew so that it secures both power supplies in the chassis.
    10. Reconnect the power cables to the power supply.
    11. Reconnect the grounding cable to the power supply.
    12. Turn on the site circuit breaker for the power supply.
