    VXA Series Media Flow Engine and Media Flow Solution Overview

    Juniper Networks Media Flow Solution is a content delivery, distribution, and caching solution that is purpose-built to address service providers’ needs for a new media network. Media Flow Solution combines content intelligence with scalable, carrier-class Juniper Networks hardware appliances to enable multiscreen delivery over a single, converged content delivery infrastructure. Media Flow Solution enables service providers to monetize rich media content, drive down transit costs, and improve the efficiency of content delivery.

    Media Flow Solution combines advanced software and hardware that is specifically designed to address the service provider’s new media delivery challenges. Purpose-built for service provider deployments, Media Flow Solution provides a converged content storage, distribution, and delivery solution that offers superior scale and dynamic hierarchical caching capabilities. The solution is applicable to wireline and wireless service providers and cable operators, and can be deployed to dramatically improve the efficiency, scale, and performance of media delivery networks.

    Media Flow Solution includes the following components:

    • Media Flow Controller is a Junos® Ready software application that combines deep, media-aware intelligence (which identifies content and tracks and analyzes its popularity) with awareness of the network, storage, and caching systems. Within a single cache device, Media Flow Controller places objects into storage based on type, size, and popularity, and dynamically manages content based on demand. Media Flow Controller can be deployed in a hierarchy to efficiently distribute content across different regions and geographies. Content that is requested frequently (hot content) can be cached closer to the subscriber where it can be served rapidly, while content that is rarely requested (long-tail content) can be kept more cost-effectively deeper in the network. This capability enables service providers to rapidly and automatically adapt to the unpredictable and ever-changing challenges of Internet content demand, while concurrently optimizing the use of network resources.
    • Media Flow Activate is a Junos Space software application that provides efficient, centralized management of multiple Media Flow Controllers that can be deployed throughout the service provider network. Media Flow Activate monitors system resources, and proactively maintains a record of key performance metrics. Media Flow Activate also enables remote management and provisioning of the entire caching infrastructure even in the most geographically distributed deployments. Interoperability with existing operations support systems (OSSs) and base station subsystems (BSSs) is provided by standard interfaces.
    • VXA Series Media Flow Engines—A portfolio of purpose-built hardware appliances that optimize the performance of the Media Flow Controller software and offer flexible storage options. These appliances are powered by dual core or quad core Intel processors and are available in four configurations that include models with Network Equipment Building System (NEBS)-compliant form factors. Media Flow Engine appliances offer expandable content storage options and can be flexibly configured with up to 8 TB of cache leveraging a variety of RAM, solid-state drive (SSD), Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA), and Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) technologies.

    The VXA1000 Series Media Flow Engine includes the following appliance:

    • VXA1002—A 1U appliance with a quad core CPU, 8 GB RAM, an AC power supply, and four pluggable drives.

    The VXA2000 Series Media Flow Engines include the following appliances:

    • VXA2002—A 2U Network Equipment-Building System (NEBS) Level 3-compliant system with a quad core CPU, 36 GB RAM, dual redundant hot-swappable DC power supplies, and 16 pluggable drives. Dual redundant AC power supplies are an available option.
    • VXA2010—A 2U NEBS Level 3-compliant system with a quad core CPU, 36 GB RAM, dual redundant hot-swappable DC power supplies, and 16 pluggable drives. Dual redundant AC power supplies are an available option.
