Create Virtual Networks and Logical Routers

Follow these steps to create virtual networks (VNs) and Logical Routers (LRs). In Contrail Networking a VN is roughly analogous to a VLAN while a LR is equal to a routing-instance on a Junos device. You use a LR to house the IRB interfaces used to route between two or more VNs.

  1. From the Overlay > Virtual Networks page, click the Create button.
  2. Enter required information as described in Table 1 and click Create. For this example, you create two virtual networks- VN-Green and VN-Red. Enter the information shown below to create the two virtual networks.Note

By default, each VN is assigned a default gateway that uses the first host identifier on the CIDR (subnet) configured for the VN. Later, you ping this gateway address to verify connectivity within a VN.

Table 1: Fields for virtual network VN -Green

    Field

    Description

    Name

Enter a name for the virtual network. For this example, we are using name VN-Green.

    Subnets

    Click Add+.

    Network IPAM

Select the default network IPAM from the list. Network IPAM enables you to manage the DNS and DHCP services.

    CIDR

Enter the IP address range that you are using. For this example, we are using the value 10.1.101.0/24.

  3. Repeat the steps to create virtual network VN-Red. Use the information provided in Table 2.

Table 2: Fields for virtual network VN -Red

    Field

    Description

    Name

Enter a name for the virtual network. For this example, we are using name VN-Red.

    Subnets

    Click Add+.

    Network IPAM

Select the default network IPAM from the list. Network IPAM enables you to manage the DNS and DHCP services.

    CIDR

Enter the IP address range that you are using. For this example, we are using the value 10.1.102.0/24.

The two virtual networks are now created.

  4. Define an LR to route between the green and red VNs. Navigate to the Overlay > Logical Routers page and click the Create button.

    Field

    Description

    Name

Enter a name for the logical router. For this example, we will create one logical router and using the name LR-G-R.

    Admin State

Select the Administrative state as Up for this example. This is the state that the router will be in when it is activated.

    Logical Router Type

Select the type as VXLAN for this example.

    Choose Fabric

Select the fabric that you are using. For this example, let’s use DC1, which is the fabric we created earlier.

    Connected Networks

Select the virtual networks that you want to connect to this logical router. For this example, you select VN-Green and VN-Red.

    Extend to Physical Router

Select the spine devices where you want the LR configured. In this example, you select both spine devices.

  5. Click the Create button to push the LR configuration to the fabric.
