EX6210 System Overview
EX6210 Switch Hardware Overview
Juniper Networks EX6210 Ethernet Switches provide high performance, scalable connectivity, and carrier-class reliability for high-density environments such as campus-access and data-center networks. The EX6210 switch is a modular system that provides high availability and redundancy for all major hardware components, including Routing Engines, switch fabric, fan tray (redundant fans), and power supplies.
You can manage EX6210 switches using the same interfaces that you use for managing other devices running Juniper Networks Junos operating system (Junos OS)—the command-line interface (CLI), the J-Web graphical interface, and Junos Space.
Benefits of the EX6210 Switch
High port and PoE+ density—The EX6210 switch provides very high port and PoE+ density in a 14 rack units (14 U) chassis. It can support up to 384 PoE+ ports with N+1 redundancy in a redundant configuration with two SRE modules and four 5,000 W AC power supplies installed. It can support up to 432 PoE+ ports with N+1 redundancy in nonredundant configurations with one SRE module and four 5,000 W AC power supplies installed.
Software
Juniper Networks EX Series Ethernet Switches run Junos OS, which provides Layer 2 and Layer 3 switching, routing, and security services. The same Junos OS code base that runs on EX Series switches also runs on all Juniper Networks J Series, M Series, MX Series, and T Series routers and SRX Series Services Gateways.
EX6200 switches support Junos OS Release 11.3R2 or later.
Chassis Physical Specifications, LCD Panel, and Backplane
The EX6210 switch is 14 rack units (14 U) in size. Three EX6210 switches can fit in a standard 42 U rack. Each EX6210 switch is designed to optimize rack space and cabling. See Figure 1 and Figure 2.

The EX6210 switch can have up to two chassis-level LCD panels, one on each Switch Fabric and Routing Engine (SRE) module. The LCD panel on the primary SRE module displays Routing Engine and chassis components’ alarm information for rapid problem identification. This LCD panel provides a user-friendly interface for performing initial switch configuration, rolling back a configuration, or restoring the switch to its default settings. See LCD Panel in an EX6200 Switch.
The EX6210 chassis backplane distributes the data, control, and management signals to various system components as well as distributes power throughout the system.
See Chassis Physical Specifications of an EX6210 Switch.
Switch Fabric and Routing Engine Modules
Switching functionality, system management, and system control functions of an EX6210 switch are performed by a Switch Fabric and Routing Engine (SRE) module. See Switch Fabric and Routing Engine (SRE) Module in an EX6200 Switch. An SRE module contains a Routing Engine and switch fabric. The SRE modules are field-replaceable units (FRUs). A nonredundant EX6210 switch configuration has one SRE module. A redundant configuration EX6210 switch has two SRE modules installed. See EX6210 Switch Configurations.
Each SRE module provides 64 Gbps of full-duplex bandwidth per line card slot. If only one SRE module is installed in a chassis, it supports 384 ports on eight line cards with 3:2 oversubscription. If two SRE modules are installed in a chassis, they provide 128 Gbps of full-duplex bandwidth to each line card slot, allowing all 384 ports to operate at wire speed.
Line Cards
The EX6210 switch supports line rate for each line card installed. You can install up to nine line cards in an EX6210 switch—one in each of the eight line card slots and one in the SRE module slot—in any combination of the line cards. The line cards in EX6200 switches combine a Packet Forwarding Engine and Ethernet interfaces on a single assembly. All line cards are hot-removable and hot-insertable FRUs.
Table 1 shows the model numbers and descriptions of the EX6200 line cards.
Table 1: EX6200 Line Cards
Model | Description | Additional Information |
---|---|---|
EX6200-48P | 48-port PoE+ line card | All 48 ports on this line card support PoE (IEEE 802.3af) and PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at). See 48-Port PoE+ Line Card in an EX6200 Switch |
EX6200-48T | 48-port RJ-45 line card | |
EX6200-48F | 48-port SFP line card |
Cooling System
The cooling system in an EX6210 switch consists of a hot-removable and hot-insertable FRU fan tray. The fan tray contains six fans—three rows of two fans each. The fan tray installs vertically on the right side on the rear of the chassis and provides front-to-back chassis cooling. See EX6210 Switch Cooling System.
Power Supplies
Power supplies for the EX6210 switch are fully redundant, load-sharing, and hot-removable and hot-insertable FRUs. An EX6210 switch chassis can hold up to four AC or DC power supplies.
Table 2 shows the details of the power supplies available for EX6200 switches.
Table 2: Power Supplies Supported on EX6200 Switches
Power Supply | Input Voltage Supported | Output Power |
---|---|---|
2500 W AC | Low-voltage line (100–20 VAC) | 1250 W |
High-voltage line (200–40 VAC) | 2500 W | |
5000 W AC | Low-voltage line |
|
High-voltage line |
| |
2100 W DC | –48 VDC through –60 VDC | 2100 W |
Only one power supply (either AC or DC) is shipped with the different chassis shipping configurations. You can purchase additional power supplies separately. See AC Power Supplies in an EX6200 Switch and DC Power Supply in an EX6200 Switch.
Mixing different types of power supplies (AC and DC or AC power supplies of different wattage) in the same chassis is not supported.
Mixing low-voltage input line and high-voltage input line power feeds in the same chassis is not supported.
EX6210 Switch Configurations
The EX6210 switch is available for shipping in four configurations. Table 3 lists the hardware configurations for the switch and the components included in each shipping configuration.

You can install up to nine line cards in the switch—one in each of the eight line card slots and one in the SRE module slot—in any combination of the line cards.
The EX6200-48F line cards are not part of the shipment; you must order them separately.
If you want to purchase additional components such as an SRE module, line cards, power supplies (AC or DC), cover panels, power cords (AC), or a power supply blank shelf for your switch, you must order them separately.
If you are upgrading your EX6200 switch from 2500 W AC power supplies to the 5000 W AC power supplies, you must order the 5000 W AC power supply cover panels separately.
