Overview of Upgrading a Line-Card Chassis

Use this procedure for the following upgrades:

  • Upgrading components on a T4000 router before integrating the router into a routing matrix with the TXP-T4000-3D configuration or TXP-Mixed-LCC-3D configuration.

  • Upgrading to TXP-LCC-3D SIBs on a T1600 router before integrating the router into a routing matrix with the TXP-T4000-3D configuration or TXP-Mixed-LCC-3D configuration.

  • Upgrading an offline T1600 LCC from TXP-T1600 SIBs to TXP-LCC-3D SIBs.

  • After upgrading an operational (passing traffic) T1600 router to the TXP-T1600 configuration using the procedures in Overview of Upgrading an Operational Line-Card Chassis and Integrating It into a TX Matrix Plus Routing Matrix (TXP-T1600 Configuration), upgrading the components on up to three more T1600 routers before integrating the routers into a routing matrix.

For information about installing a new line-card chassis, see the T1600 Core Router Hardware Guide andT4000 Core Router Hardware Guide.

You must proceed through the upgrade process in the following order:

  1. Verify that you have the required hardware and software. Order any needed hardware components and software. For more information, see the following hardware requirements:

  2. Review all safety guidelines and warnings for the TX Matrix Plus router and LCCs.Warning

To avoid harm to yourself or the TX Matrix Plus router as you install and maintain it, you must follow the safety procedures for working with Internet routers, as well as the guidelines and warnings for working with and near electrical equipment. However, providing an exhaustive set of guidelines for working with electrical equipment is beyond the scope of this documentation.

See General Safety Guidelines for Juniper Networks Devices and General Safety Warnings for Juniper Networks Devices.

  3. Upgrade the software on the LCC, if needed.
  4. Remove unsupported FPCs, and install blanks in the FPC slots. See Hardware and Software Requirements for a T1600 Line-Card Chassis in a TX Matrix Plus Routing Matrix and Hardware and Software Requirements for a T4000 Line-Card Chassis in a TX Matrix Plus Routing Matrix. For information about removing FPCs, see the T1600 Core Router Hardware Guide and T4000 Core Router Hardware Guide.Note

Although you can choose to leave unsupported FPCs in the LCC, the FPCs and PICs installed in those FPCs will not come online and will not function.

  5. Gather the tools required to upgrade the LCC hardware components.
    • Phillips (+) screwdriver, number 2

    • Electrostatic discharge (ESD) grounding wrist strap

  6. Unpack the LCC components and verify the parts received.
  7. Upgrade all components required except the SIBs.
  8. Optionally, install the rear LCC cable management system. See Installing the Line-Card Chassis Rear Cable Management System.
  9. Upgrade the SIBs
