Upgrading the Line-Card Chassis Host Subsystems

 

Upgrade the host subsystem (Routing Engines and Control Boards) if the required hardware is not already installed. The RE-C1800 Routing Engines and LCC-CBs are optional for standalone T640 and T1600 routers, but are standard in a standalone T4000 router.

We recommend that you manage the system using a directly attached management device instead of an out-of-band management device. This provides you access to the system if its control plane is not functioning.

Note

For the TXP-T1600 configuration, you must gracefully upgrade the current Routing Engines to Junos OS Release 10.1 or later before installing the RE-C1800 Routing Engines and LCC-CBs.

To upgrade the host subsystems to RE-C1800 Routing Engines and LCC-CBs:

  1. Determine which host subsystem is functioning as the master or the backup by using one of the two following methods:
    • Check the Routing Engine LEDs on the craft interface. If the green MASTER LED is lit, the corresponding host subsystem is functioning as the master.

    • Issue the following CLI command. The master Routing Engine is designated Master in the Current state field:

      user@host> show chassis routing-engine
  2. Take the backup host subsystem offline. See the T1600 Core Router Hardware Guide.
  3. Attach an electrostatic discharge (ESD) grounding strap to your bare wrist, and connect the strap to one of the ESD points on the chassis.
  4. Set the M/S configuration switches on each LCC-CB before you install them in the chassis:
    • Set the chassis ID switch on each LCC-CB.

      Note

      When you integrate an operational router with the TX Matrix Plus router, you must assign a chassis ID of 0 to the LCC.

    • Set the M/S switch on each LCC-CB on the LCC router faceplate to S.

  5. Upgrade the backup control board with an LCC-CB. Use the standard replacement procedures described in the following documentation:

    Replace the backup Routing Engine with an RE-C1800 Routing Engine. Use the standard replacement procedures described in the following documentation:

  6. Perform a graceful switchover to the backup by issuing the request chassis routing-engine master switch command:
    user@host> request chassis routing-engine master switch
  7. Replace the other Control Board (which now belongs to the backup host subsystem) with an LCC-CB. Use the standard replacement procedures.
  8. Replace the other Routing Engine (which now belongs to the backup host subsystem) with an RE-C1800 Routing Engine. Follow the standard replacement procedures.
  9. Perform a graceful switchover to the original master by issuing the request chassis routing-engine master switch command:
    user@host> request chassis routing-engine master switch
  10. Verify that the LCC-CBs and RE-C1800 Routing Engine are displayed in the output of the show chassis hardware command:
    user@host> show chassis hardware
    Note

    The description for the RE-C1800 Routing Engine, part number 740-026941, is LCC RE before the Junos OS Release 10.3 , and RE-DUO-1800 for Junos OS Release 10.3 and later.
