Upgrade the JCS1200 Route Engine Software

This section discusses the following topics:

Upgrading to Junos OS Release 12.3

The RE-JCS-1X2400-48G-S Routing Engine is shipped with the latest Junos OS installed. To upgrade the RE-JCS-1X2400-48G-S Routing Engine to 64-bit Junos OS Release 12.3 or later, follow the instructions in the Junos OS Release Notes for the T Series routers. For more information on configuring the Routing Engines on the JCS1200 platform, see the Protected System Domain Configuration Guide PDF Document.

When upgrading or downgrading Junos OS, always use the jinstall package. Use other packages (such as the jbundle package) only when so instructed by a Juniper Networks support representative. For information about the contents of the jinstall package and details of the installation process, see the Junos OS Installation and Upgrade Guide.

Note: Before upgrading, back up the file system and the currently active Junos OS configuration so that you can recover to a known, stable environment in case the upgrade is unsuccessful. Issue the following command:

    user@host> request system snapshot

The installation process rebuilds the file system and completely reinstalls Junos OS. Configuration information from the previous software installation is retained, but the contents of log files might be erased. Stored files on the routing platform, such as configuration templates and shell scripts (the only exceptions are the juniper.conf and ssh files) might be removed. To preserve the stored files, copy them to another system before upgrading or downgrading the routing platform. For more information, see the Junos OS Installation and Upgrade Guide.

Note: After you install a Junos OS Release 12.3 jinstall package, you cannot issue the request system software rollback command to return to the previously installed software. Instead you must issue the request system software add validate command and specify the jinstall package that corresponds to the previously installed software.

    Downgrading from Release 12.3

To downgrade from Release 12.3 to another supported release, follow the procedure for upgrading, but replace the 12.3 jinstall package with one that corresponds to the appropriate release.

Note: You cannot downgrade more than three releases. For example, if your routing platform is running Junos OS Release 11.4, you can downgrade the software to Release 10.4 directly, but not to Release 10.3 or earlier; as a workaround, you can first downgrade to Release 10.4 and then downgrade to Release 10.3.

For more information, see the Junos OS Installation and Upgrade Guide.

Installing Linux on the RE-JCS-1X2400-48G-S Routing Engine

The RE-JCS-1X2400-48G-S Routing Engine is shipped with the latest Linux installed. If the solid-state drive (SSD) on the RE-JCS-1X2400-48G-S Routing Engine becomes corrupt, you can use the universal serial bus (USB) storage media provided with your system to install Linux on the RE-JCS-1X2400-48G-S Routing Engine. Reinstall each RE-JCS-1X2400-48G-S Routing Engine separately to avoid disrupting network operation as follows:

    1. Insert the USB media into the media tray in the JCS1200 chassis.
    2. Use the web UI to log in to the Advanced Management Module (AMM) and run the remote console.

Blade Tasks > Remote Control > Start Remote Control

    3. From the remote console, click on the media tray icon located at the top of the menu, and select the slot number of the RE-JCS-1X2400-48G-S Routing Engine you want to install the software on.
    4. Open a separate terminal and telnet into the serial console of the RE-JCS-1X2400-48G-S Routing Engine.
    5. From the remote console, power on the RE-JCS-1X2400-48G-S Routing Engine. The RE-JCS-1X2400-48G-S Routing Engine will boot from the USB media.

      Blade Tasks > Power/Restart Menu

    6. Type y and press Enter when you see the following message on the serial console:

WARNING: The installation will erase the contents of your disks. Do you wish to continue (y/n)? Type "y" and hit [Enter]

    7. Wait for the installation to complete. When the installation is complete, you should see the following message:

Eject the installation media and Hit [Enter] to reboot?

    8. Press Enter to reboot the RE-JCS-1X2400-48G-S Routing Engine. Wait 10 seconds and then reassign the media tray to a different RE-JCS-1X2400-48G-S Routing Engine or to None.
    9. Remove the USB media from the media tray in the JCS1200 chassis.
