Removing a Transceiver from a Switch
The transceivers for EX Series switches and OCX1100 switches are hot-removable and hot-insertable field-replaceable units (FRUs): You can remove and replace them without powering off the switch or disrupting switch functions.

Before you begin removing a transceiver from a switch, ensure that you have taken the necessary precautions for safe handling of lasers (see Laser and LED Safety Guidelines and Warnings for Switches).
Ensure that you have the following parts and tools available:
- An antistatic bag or an antistatic mat
- Rubber safety caps to cover the transceiver and fiber-optic cable connector
- A dust cover to cover the port
Figure 46 shows how to remove a QSFP+ transceiver. The procedure is the same for all types of transceivers except the CFP transceivers.
To remove a transceiver from a switch:
- Place the antistatic bag or antistatic mat on a flat, stable surface.
- Label the cable connected to the transceiver so that you
can reconnect it correctly.
Warning: Do not look directly into a fiber-optic transceiver or into the ends of fiber-optic cables. Fiber-optic transceivers and fiber-optic cables connected to transceivers emit laser light that can damage your eyes.
Warning: Do not leave a fiber-optic transceiver uncovered except when inserting or removing a cable. The rubber safety cap keeps the port clean and prevents accidental exposure to laser light.
Caution: Do not bend fiber-optic cables beyond their minimum bend radius. An arc smaller than a few inches in diameter can damage the cables and cause problems that are difficult to diagnose.
- Remove the cable connected to the transceiver (see Disconnecting a Fiber-Optic Cable from a Switch). Cover the transceiver and the end of each fiber-optic cable connector with a rubber safety cap immediately after disconnecting the fiber-optic cables.
To remove an SFP, SFP+, XFP, or QSFP+ transceiver:
- By using your fingers, pull open the ejector lever on
the transceiver to unlock the transceiver.
Caution: Before removing the transceiver, make sure you open the ejector lever completely until you hear it click. This prevents damage to the transceiver.
- Grasp the transceiver ejector lever and gently slide the
transceiver approximately 0.5 in. (1.3 cm) straight out
of the port.
Caution: To prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage to the transceiver, do not touch the connector pins at the end of the transceiver.

1—Ejector lever- By using your fingers, pull open the ejector lever on
the transceiver to unlock the transceiver.
To remove a CFP transceiver:
- Loosen the screws on the transceiver by using your fingers.
- Grasp the screws on the transceiver and gently slide the
transceiver approximately 0.5 in. (1.3 cm) straight out
of the port.
Caution: To prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage to the transceiver, do not touch the connector pins at the end of the transceiver.
- By using your fingers, grasp the body of the transceiver and pull it straight out of the port.
- Place the transceiver in the antistatic bag or on the antistatic mat placed on a flat, stable surface.
- Place the dust cover over the empty port.
